As I said overall league attendance wasn't that great in those days.
Vancouver
83/84 13,626
84/85 11147
85/86 10446
86/87 10406
87/88 11002
88/89 13772
89/90 15150
Boston
83/84 13588
84/85 13257
85/86 12431
86/87 12128
87/88 13707
88/89 14314
89/90 14340
You can see that Winnipeg's attendance wasn't too far out of line with a couple of solid franchises. Also one of the main reasons the Jets left was because they couldn't get a new arena.

Winnipeg season tickets are sold out for years to come with a maxed out waiting list people pay annually to be on.
Definitely trouble a brewin' in the peg.

Vancouver was anything but a "solid franchise" for much of the 80s.
You are also cherry picking.
In 83-84, the Jets were 16th of 21 teams.
84-85: 16th
85-86: 13th
86-87: 14th
87-88: 18th
88-89: 18th of 19 (Hockeydb is missing Chicago and NJ - both were likely ahead)
89-90: 19th
The Jets were almost always bottom third of the league, and the apathy increased as the calendar flipped toward the 90s.

Meanwhile the Jets are valued as the 16th most valuable franchise in the NHL despite their small arena and seem to be making money while the Coyotes have lost money every year they've been in Arizona. Most teams go through good and bad times while the Coyotes only have bad times.

Winnipeg Arena also had only about 12,500 unobstructed seats so that also played a part.
Minnesota had some seasons below 10,000 in average attendance.

During the broadcast last night, TSN mentioned that Broward County, which owns the arena, has hired a consultant to look at operating the arena without an NHL tenant. The Panthers, who operate the facility, have asked the county for assistance.
It seems obvious that the writing is on the wall for Miami/Sunrise. Given the divisional alignment, It seems that if Quebec has a handshake deal with the league in place, this would be it.

I agree with Res. The new arena in Quebec will be ready for next season.

I don't think it makes a difference.

Chicago has a history of fans who care and show up. Phoenix and Miami don't. Pretty poor comparison.

It does have a shred of validity to it, however. Nobody showed up in Chicago because the team was horribly run and chronically bad. Nobody shows up in Florida for largely the same reason. Unfortunately, the Panthers' situation is probably beyond saving - short of a major playoff run this year (or next, if they survive that long), and continued playoff appearances.

The only reason Florida and Phoenix don't lose more every year is the Canadian fans who come from November to March. But they both are massive money losers that get taxpayer money to piss away. They both should have moved years ago but Gary would be admitting failure. Panthers will be interesting though because they'll go to the highest bidder. Seattle could certainly be in play for them.

The "Gary would be admitting failure" crap is just lazy arguing. Especially after the Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg. Doubly so since the Panthers were part of an expansion phase that began before he was hired (though the teams awarded after).
Though it does show just how good he is at being a lightning rod for the BOG's decisions.

Gosbee was correct, no team will move at a time like this when the NHL could net $500 million in expansion fees.
As long as there are owners interested, and a building.. why move?
