Wow I take it back, Regina gave up 1st, 2nd and 7th round picks in that deal... and Red Deer included a 4th.

Still surprised Red Deer moved the player but they got decent value.

After trading Klimchuk they've moved Dryden Hunt and Kyle Burroughs for a prospect and a couple picks to Medicine Hat and now Connor Gay to Red Deer for Jake Leschyshyn, some picks involved.

The second deal hasn't been fully confirmed as to the details but it sounds like they did really well... getting the 6th overall pick in the draft a few months after he was picked and potentially more picks for a 19 year old who is just an OK player for me. Red Deer must be desperate with the memorial cup coming up next year - 3 of their top 6 scorers this year are 19s already so they'll have to sell one at a cut rate this offseason. That's a massive cost to upgrade from Kopeck to Gay.

Bad decision to award the memorial cup to Red Deer next year anyway imo... how you give it to a team that missed the playoffs last year is beyond me. Losing Cote and Maxwell next year, they are a long ways from being even a top 2 team in their conference and contending with Brandon or MH who will both be very good next year, let alone the whole league.

Still no word on Draisaitl being dealt. After all the rumors PA's GM came out a couple days ago and said he was still shopping him and it wasn't done so Kelowna doesn't seem like a lock at all unless he just made that up for some reason. Would be nice if they get him but I'm not convinced Kelowna is the lock everybody is saying they are even if they do. They'll have a good chance is all.
Kelowna is getting Drausaitl 100%. Delay is until WJC is over. Schmidli and a 1st going the other way.

Olsen is looking likely as well.

Thought based on the comments on twitter from Lambert that Olsen was a longshot - hope your right though, he would be a huge add for no assets.

Seattle has had Roberts Lipsbergs sent back down so they have 4 20 year olds now. Would love to see Kelowna bring Hickman home if the cost is reasonable.

I don't like the move but the Hitmen have traded for G Brendan Burke from Portland for Johnson and a pick.

Kelowna finally got Draisaitl today and gave up Yorke, Schmidli and a 1st rounder, a 4th and a conditional 4th.

For a player of this calibre, I don't remember such a high NHL pick being traded, giving up a marginal euro an undrafted defenceman and one good pick doesn't seem too bad. I do think Yorke is a good depth defenceman though.

Reading the media today, Edmonton told PA they would only return him if he was dealt to Kelowna.... so part of me wonders how they heck they got anything of value out of Kelowna? It was basically a take what you can get situation and they got 5 pieces.

Kelowna still needs to find a 20 year old. Hickman has had season ending surgery so he is out of contention.

Things getting quiet on the Olsen front. Rockets will be bringing in a 20 though, think they were waiting on Olsen so if that looks like it won't happen they'll bring someone else in even if it isn't a big name.

The Rockets didn't really give up much. Perhaps you like Yorke a little more, but to me the guy is a liability every time he's on the ice. He's slow, can't move the puck with the pace the teamm plays at and runs around in his own zone a bit too much as teams target his side of the ice. Schmidli killed penalties but not much else and had absolute hands of stone.

The 1st always hurts (first time they've ever traded one) but it'll be a late pick and with Bruce as the chairman of the board it's probably in his best interest to not skew values around the league and make enemies by raping the Raiders in three separate trades this year.

There's been a lot of weird trades going down right now. Not sure what the Hitmen are thinking with Brendan Burke. They traded a backup for another backup and threw in a draft pick to boot. Burke has continually shown that he sucks but time will tell.

Also the Josh Connolly for Brycen Martin deal was voided after Connolly refused to report to Speedy Creek so Connolly goes to Prince George instead (not sure how thats better than Swift) for Marc McNulty (seems like a real bad deal for the Cougars).

Then you have Martin dealt to Saskatoon but the Blades inexplicably give up a 1st rounder along with Jordan Thomson (who's on like his 5th team already).

Just a lot of really interesting things happening right now.

Minor deal...Hitmen send Marshall Donald to Edmonton for a 4th rd pick. I wonder if this leads to another deal for a better defenseman for the Hitmen. They've been looking for one.

Trade deadline passed about an hour ago. Not many trades trickling in. Hitmen decided not to make another move, disappointing deadline imo.

Not sure how long this is going to last, but the Hitmen have gone into beast mode lately. 7-0, 5-2, 8-0 and 10-1 in their last four games. Oil Kings this afternoon, and they might be a bit snarly after losing that 5-2 game to us.

It helps being healthy for basically the first time this season. That is of course assuming Rankin is alright after taking a nasty cross check in the throat last night.

Yup. Finally getting some goaltending helps a lot too.

And another big win... 5-0. The scoreline is deceptive though. Calgary jumped out 2-0 early then basically had to battle the Oil Kings tooth an nail for 45 minutes before they exploded for three more.

Hitmen on a nice little run winning 15 of 16 games. Currently on an 11 game road trip in which they have started 4-0 on. Couple tough tests this weekend with games in Everett and Kelowna though.

Probably lose to Kootenay in the first round like they do every year. It's a tradition.

I don't think any of the Central teams are any better than any other, so record disparity notwithstanding, anybody could win the Calgary/Kootenay and Medicine Hat/Red Deer series. Both are pick-ems, imo.

And it is only a minor thing given how close they ended up, But I like how Brandon wins the conference but doesn't get the worst qualifying team. They won't have any problems with Edmonton though.

It's difficult to predict. That's for sure. Thrower and Curle were talking on the FAN about goaltending. I think that's the biggest difference maker for the Central teams. Unfortunately for the Hitmen, our goaltending has been questionable all season long. I like Shields, but he's not a solid #1. Burke has played well, but hasn't really been given the reigns all season. It's going to come down to how productive our top forward lines are. Here's hoping that Tambo, Helgy, and Ranks will be motivated to make their final WHL run a good one!

And they have to contain Reinhart. He almost beat them by himself last year (with Descheneau riding shotgun). If Max goes off hard again the Hitmen could be in trouble. If they contain him to under 2 points per game, they should be looking pretty good.
