Considering it is just a prospect game and these kids are as a rule not close to making the NHL, that play is pretty stupid. Sure, play hard and prove yourself, but the Stanley Cup isn't on the line. The guy on the other side is trying to make the NHL too, so why run the possibility of ruining his career with a elbow to the head?
The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!
I'm completely serious - I do believe Big Ern having a few words prior to puck drop made a huge difference. No Canucks even tried to play Gaudreau physically that game (outside of that first interference call), let alone go after him with bad intentions.
There was no emotion from either team. It was the last game of the season for a team that severely underachieved. They had checked out. Plus, they didn't have any reason to go after Gaudreau. Why would they have in the first place?

Well like I said, pretty much no one even tried to play him physically.
And both teams may have been mailing it in, but it doesn't mean that the play on the ice was as lackluster and physically lifeless as you're suggesting it was. If it really was, Big Ern probably wouldn't have had to do that in the first place.

I don't think you're stupid. I wasn't sure if you were speaking in hyperbole or serious. I don't think they had anything to do with each other but we'll never know. Seems to be it was a game that meant nothing to either team, so I'm not sure why someone would've gone after Gaudreau.
Actually, there tends to be more cheap shots in meaningless games, as evidenced again on Monday. Probably because players don't want to take a stupid penalty in important games.

Monday was absolutely not meaningful to the players. Not even the same realm. These players were being evaluated and needed to prove they will finish their checks. Game 82 of a dreadful season is not that
For those fans saying Corrado was penalized correctly I strongly disagree!
A shot like that would be a suspension in the nhl, I would say 5 games cause he is not a repeat offender. So punishment didn't fit the crime and he knew it! 5 minute major and a game misconduct in garbage time and people here think He's suffered enough?
Fact Corrado made those comments angers me more, if he did that in the nhl (he would of kept his mouth shut) otherwise risk a 15 game or more suspension. Deliberate intent, and he fully admits it! Knowing full well he can not be suspended.
Do I want Corrado to be Bertuzzied? No, fair play would be for one of our players to cheap shot him the same way. I don't want that either. I want him to answer the bell one on one with one of our tougher guys. Not the Big Ern, Not Engelland, I don't want the guy injured, just hurt!
As for the argument of nuclear deterrents and goons? I love goon on goon hockey. Two heavy weights going at it. Yet a bigger impact is made on the ice by having light heavyweights and middleweights patrolling the ice.
Once the Flames got Westgarth we played better hockey. Is it cause westgarth is such a great player, wow never thought those two words would be used in the same sentence. When Mcgrattan was in the box there was still protection on the ice. Made a big difference with confidence of our players. Look at the record in the last third of the season.
I am old lol, seen so many careers ended with cheap shots unanswered. Best way to ruin a young player is to have him be afraid on the ice. I don't think Johnny Hockey is afraid, Team has been built to protect the young guys for a couple of seasons or more.
Looking forward to the canucks game. To bad Tortorella is gone! I wonder who Hartley puts out the first shift lol?
There's no way that's worth 5 games, let alone 15.
The emotion of a prized prospect getting the forearm shiver makes some people see it worse than it was. At very most that's a 1 game suspension. In reality, I bet a hearing and a fine would've happened. Maybe

Direct and intentional shot to the face.
With almost every suspendable hit, the arguments centre around whether or not the initial and primary contact was the head. There is absolutely no question here - he throws his elbow out and hits him directly in the face.
That is how concussions are made.
If the goal is to reduce headshots in order to reduce concussions (and I believe that is in fact the case), then I can't see how anyone would come to the conclusion that this wasn't suspension-worthy.
There's no way that's worth 5 games, let alone 15.
Its the fact Corrado admitted he deliberately did what he did that makes this worth a suspension. I did not hear an apology. Can some one forward me to one? I may change my tune, Even a BS one!
He fully admitted intent! No player admits intent! Admitting that gets a nasty suspension! I say its worth five games up to 15, you may disagree. Hey that's fine.
Corrado............... did an interview and made statements. Flames will be coming back to make statements on the ice towards him and his teammates.
He should of said "I regret what I did, there is no place in hockey for that". To my knowledge he didn't say that. So unless I hear otherwise it was deliberate intent to injure!
It does not have to be Johnny hockey, any player. Cheap and dirty hit and not owning up to it, yet admitting he was trying to run the guy.
No NHL player says what he said when they are facing suspension, he wasn't facing suspension so he had an attitude about it.
Don't get me wrong, justice will be served. Ask Lombardi about a flying elbow from hatcher years ago, if it affected him? Never was the same player!
Cheap elbow, penalties don't do it justice. Attitude afterwards, demands retaliation. Could of been different if the guy owned up to his mistake or at least felt a little bit of guilt. Not even a BS apology.
Totally agree. The fact that Corrado said what he did shows intent to target the head so there is no reason to make excuses for him. He targeted the smallest player on the ice with an elbow to his head in an exhibition game!
He weighs 190 lbs. Gaudreau is 160 lbs. so it's only fair that a flame weighing approximately 226 lbs. hits Corrado in the head with an elbow... Bollig is listed at 223 lbs. Close enough for me. See how he feels about swinging elbows at guys after that.
One game at most as a "wake up, you can't do that" sort of thing. Yes it was dirty but no it wasn't the worst play in the world, heck I suspect we'll see far worse in a month or so.
I think he'll get the message when the teams play again that it wasn't ok, don't really believe a suspension is warranted in this case.
In his educated opinion. Corrado has never been in trouble with the NHL before so it is a very educated opinion saying he wouldn't get 5, let alone 15. If that was in the regular season, he might get 2 games considering there was zero injury as well.
