I think the average mean household income in ALabama is 30k. (american) Kate makes about 17k at the pharmacy part time.

Haha, I don't think people even talk about anything under like $40k in terms of salary in Calgary. Up here I find everything under that gets referred to (and typically paid as) hourly.
I don't know if I've ever heard of someone saying they make $17k or $30k a year.

So after about two weeks after I started they fired the GM. Basically left me to my own demise. I wasn't taught a damn thing and was left to do nothing. I grew to hate this job with a passion.
I'm waiting for a call from the embassy which should be some time this week.
They hired a new GM from Tennessee who, for the lack of better terms is a moron. He has less experience than me and just is an idiot. I've tried to explain to him what the hotel needs and he does the exact opposite. The employees cant stand him and everything I've done to try to turn the property into what a hotel is suppose to be ran like. This property is where the inmates run the joint, no leadership at all and seems that no one cares.
I've been at a hotel that has strict checks and balances and it was ran amazingly smooth. I tried to enact those things in this property with nothing but fighting back from the employees and sales.
I had no power, no one wanted to listen to me and I was summarily let go on Friday. I was told that the "direction of the hotel wanted to go in I wasn't part of the plan" So I have no write ups, no discipline problems and was let go.
I cant believe what kind of property that was, I shouldn't have jumped right into the other property right away, I needed a break and I plan on taking a week or two off before I jump back in.

with all the praise you received for this line, could the "teammate" line set the opposite tone where the employees now walk over you instead of looking to you as an authority figure?

Too late for this I guess, but you should have gotten Gordon Ramsay's Hotel Hell or whatever in to fix it up.

It shouldn't. Executed properly, maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork and acceptance will always accomplish more than a boss who runs things with fear and degradation. That being said if you try to be more of a friend than a boss it can blow up in your face, its a fine line!

I think if for nothing other than appearances it's important to come in and observe things to see how the status quo is operating. See what's working and what's not.
When a new manager comes in and starts changing everything to be like his other employer, and all you hear is "When I was at *other company* we did it this way" you get tired of it pretty quick and assume they are blindly copying another model and not making their own decisions.
Not saying this is the case here, but this has nothing to do with how you relate to your subordinates.
In some cases you are the guy busting up the country club and you'll be resented no matter what.

Ugh, I've never seen this work out well. Because it's almost never true, and when push comes to shove and unpopular decisions have to be made, that "teammate" comes off as slimy, untrustworthy and manipulative.

I'm a manager and I call everyone on my team 'buddies'. It works well. I hate the traditional, stereotypical 'manager-employee' relationship, so I'm changing it. I make sure everyone is cracking jokes and saying dumb puns all the time, and you're allowed to swear on my team.
I'm taking the 'corporate' out of the office, and my team loves it.

^I worked for a guy like that for about 6 years. Loved every minute of it. We still keep in touch, and I'd go back and work for him again in a heartbeat if the right situation came up on both ends.
