Im not even sure why Granlund is ahead of Reinhart. Max has a far more well rounded game than Granlund and produces points at the same rate.

I don't care how bad of a year you have nobody drops 4 spots in a year.

This narrative about trying him on RW and then him tearing it up on LW seems a bit fictional to me. His much did you see him in abbots ford anyway? Who are the ignorant ones?
Prospects can easily drop 4 spots. Doesn't mean Baertschi is a bust. But we drafted a guy with higher upside (Bennett) and a few players with very high upside had much better years than Sven (Poirier and Granlund)

Got any more years? Would be great to see them all to see how genius/terrible we are at this. Would be fun to track who the most prescient CP poster is.

Reinhart doesn't have top 6 skill.
He may make for a very good third liner that can bring energy and an edge.

When this is your 2009 prospect ranking list, its little wonder that 2010 and on was a tough ride!
At least we got Backlund right! But way down the list at 9 was the next actual player.

That pretty well illustrates why the Flames are where they are today.

Ironically this ranking, though unspectacular, does speak to the Flames taking a step. A lot of players that had a role in that 2004 run were on the 2002 list.

Surprised this is as much of a landslide as it is.
I'm going to bury my head in the sand and ignore those prospects lists that Bingo is posting right now. Nightmare inducing.

the best part of those years was when injuries hit, and other teams were looking for their AHL youth to step in and show what they can do and help contribute, the flames would bring magic-man jamie lundmark, who did pretty well, all things considered.

Cherry picking stats usually doesn't prove much. Baertschi played on one of the best teams in the CHL. Poirier scored more goals on a weaker team with less help up front. I almost think Poirier's totals are more impressive when you put them in context.
I went Poirier. Breakaway speed is so huge in the NHL. But he also has a great shot, tenacity, skill, etc. Very well rounded. I think his game will adapt quite well to the NHL eventually and he has a high upside too.

I agree. Poirier just seems a little more aggressive tenacious. I like Baertschi's skill, but I don't like his laid back style and attitude.

Yeah, there have definitely been worse ones than 2002. At least there are a good number of NHLers there.
What always seems to be missing from these old lists is any sort of wow factor, where you felt a player truly had the potential to be a star (outside of Phaneuf, which was a deservedly hyped pick). I don't ever remember getting excited about the potential of a Flames prospect in the way I am about the current crop. Who knows if they will ever turn into stars, but in previous years we'd be putting all our hopes into a Morgan Klimchuck level guy, and hoping he would emerge as a star (even though you never really expected it to happen). No offense to Klimchuck.

Perhaps he changes that and gets stonger but from what he has shown his AHL numbers are nice (certainly not great) but not near good enough to show that he will score enough in the NHL to overcome his weakness.

This description makes a lot of sense as for why you are not enthusiastic about a prospect, I just don't understand why you are using it to describe Granlund. I found Granlund's strength against NHL players unremarkable (either way) and he was starting to produce just as he has at every level. He had 3 points in 6 games (appeared in 7 but only played 12 seconds in the last one).
It is more likely than not that he'll get stronger... he turned 21 in April. And while he's not big, focusing on his size seems unnecessary. He's listed at 5'11 by the Flames and 6'0 by the AHL and some others and 185 lbs, NHL average for forwards was 6'1 202 lbs in 2010.
The description of his AHL numbers as nice but not great is an understatement. From a cursory look at the top AHL scorers there are 6 players (Boychuk, Sceviour, Hoffman, Adam, Street, and Smith-Pelley) who scored more goals per game and none of those players were first year pros in north america nor as young as Granlund. According to the AHL he was 2nd in points per game for rookies behind Ryan Strome.
So compared to other rookies in the AHL Granlund was 2nd in points per game and 1st in goals per game. Those are great numbers.
He was also a remarkably consistent scorer.
Totals by month:
Oct: 6 GP - 3 P (.5 ppg)
Nov: 14 GP - 13 P (.93 ppg)
Dec: 9 GP - 8 P (.89 ppg)
Jan: 11 GP - 8 P (.73 ppg)
Feb 10 GP - 12 P (1.2 ppg)
Apr: 2 GP - 2 P (1.0 ppg)
Playoffs
4 GP - 5 P (1.25 ppg)
NHL
6 GP - 3 P (.5 ppg)
Anyways, I don't mean to jump on anyone about their opinion. I'm just a fan of Granlund and would like to encourage a little more excitement about a really good player in the system.

I think other than Phaneuf, back in the day there were players that "could" be impact players or productive NHLers, versus the modern list that "should" play.
I doubt the entire top 10 list we come up with will be an all star team, in fact we know very well that half of them won't. But if the Flames turn the 2014 prospect list into 3 star players, 3 solid contributors, and 3 depth players then they move way up the standings.

If all of the Top 10 players achieve their highest potential, I think we have the ability to be a Cup contender (provided we get some defense at some point). Now we all know that won't happen, but man, even if 4/5 out of these guys turn out as hoped, that's a fantastic group of kids to work with.
I'm totally drinking the kool-aid on this group.
