Nice! A great reason to watch the WC this year.

i'd have to think Brodie would be on the list of candidates as well. Didn't he play last year?

I'm really glad Monahan is getting into the National Team pipeline.

Question for Brodie and few other players are they healthy to play?

Brodie missed the last game due to injury.

I wish the ice hockey federations would start invites and offers in Jan/Feb rather than this mad scramble the day after the season ends. Players that know that they won't be in the NHL playoffs could send in their requests to join as well. It would make for a much better team; an increase in the team mentality and more fun for the players in the tournament.

The ice hockey federations could send preliminary invites and players could let them know of their interest. They could put together a list of 30 or so players with updates and a couple of get togethers then take out players if they reach the playoffs.

You think players are going to admit their team is out in January?

All you will get is maybes and anyone who did commit could still drop out due to injury.

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Am told that in addition to Mikael Backlund and Sean Monahan, Jiri Hudler will also make an appearance at the World Championship. #Flames

That's awesome for Hudler. Good news that the Czech national team has decided to stop being a running joke.

Wow, I just checked the schedule - 16 teams, 7 games of round-robin, plus quarters, semis, and the final - that's 10 games to win the championship!! That's insane!! How can people get excited for a Denmark vs Italy or a Belarus vs Kazakshtan matchup?

How can people get excited for a Buffalo-Florida matchup? Because they like hockey and they follow those teams. I mean you do know there's actually people living in those countries?

Personally, I've always thought part of the attraction of the international tournaments is watching some teams and players you'd never otherwise see.

It's interesting to check the level of hockey around the world every now and then, and there's occasionally some players I specifically want to check out, like Berra last year.

I don't always follow the world championships, but when I do, I try to catch at least one of those lower tier matchups. A lot of it depends on the schedule and how invested I am in what goes in Stanley Cup playoffs.

I am Canadian, but I am sorry, I probably won't have any interest watching a Canada vs Greneda FIFA World Cup qualifying match....

I love how diverse our Flames' team is going to be this year for the WC.

Sean - Canada
Johnny - USA
Jiri - Czech Republic
Mikael - Sweden
(Possibly) Karri - Finland

It's too bad that neither Brodie or Gio are going to play for Canada.

Me too. I enjoy watching the tournament online and have a couple of good livestreams lined up.
Right now I'm enjoying a really good Gagarin Cup playoffs.

Why not? What harm would it be to say "If we're out then sure"?
As for injuries, that would be covered by the number if invites. I didn't say set the roster, just plan the team make up and get together a couple of times.
