He talks too much. Why come out and have a press conference and state that GMs make the biggest mistakes on deadline day by over-paying for marginal players when your team is clearly in a sell position? I wish he would just shut up, talk less and let his moves do the talking for him.
Oh wait, this was Brian Burke and not Jay Feaster - let me revise my narrative.
I love how Burke is so honest and blunt to the media.

Seemed (to me at least) like he didn't even really want to do the presser. Some of his answers got pretty short "yes" "No" "Of course" and even "I''ll have an answer tomorrow, I want to get back to work"

... but before he said words to that effect (I don't think he specifically used those words) he said that the cap space they had would be an asset that they could use in the rebuilding effort. It might not be as specific as "retain salary" and "take bad contracts" but it still clearly denoted a willingness to leverage monetary resources to aid in the rebuild.

It sounded to me from what he said that he was looking to use the cap space to sign UFA's last summer and never did.
That he wasn't open to retaining salary in the Bouwmeester trade is clear. Burke is taking the opposite stance. Can't remember if Feaster specifically addressed taking on a bad contract for a high pick but he should have been considering that as well.
IMO Feaster and Burke's stance on these issues were quite different and I'm much more impressed and comfortable with Burke's stance. Most of what Feaster said in the last couple years of his tenure was worrying IMO.

Man, Burke has the patience of Job there. Those reporters were asking stupid obvious questions.
"Can you put on a scale of 1-10 how important this deadline is the the club?"
Buzz off
"Can you give us an example of another trade deadline that was similar to this one"
Seriously? I got work to do.

Well to be fair when you've got Jermaine Franklin and Eric Francis in the same room the potential for asinine questions is unlimited.
"Prospects? We aren't trading any prospects"

Pretty sure I heard Grant Pollock's voice asking one of those dumb questions. Didn't know he even had press credentials anymore.

It says he was requested to be available. He didn't come out and have a press conference. He had a 5 minute chat with reporters and revealed exactly nothing.

I like the comment about the source of his bigger players. Paraphrase, in the playoffs you are going to play 4 teams. One team is going to be skilled and you have to match their skill. One team is going to have speed, so you have to match their speed. One team will have size and you will have to match their size. The last will be a hybrid. So, you might not need everyone who is big but you need enough big players to play with the team that is big.
Kind of nice way of putting it, for the people who think every year "ok Detriot is small and skilled, we need to be small and skilled" then change their tune next year, "LA is big, we need to be big."

What I liked:
That he has free reign to spend to the cap to take salaries and contracts
That he values every pick, places high value on 2nd rounders
That he's going for a mix of skill, speed, size, and special teams
What I didn't like:
That he wants to be a buyer next year
That he wants to get players instead of picks
Don't get me wrong, I like the sentiment that he wants the team to be competitive quickly. But the team will not be competitive quickly. Lets just call it as it is. There's way too little depth on D and in net and a ton of question marks at forward. Why not just be honest with the fanbase instead of trying to mess with peoples' expectations?

You are always trying to win. That's it.
So he wants to be a buyer next year... He won't be.
So he wants NHL ready good prospects.. It's unlikely he will get any.
But am GM, he better want it that way, imo
