According to Eric Francis, it is per NHL standards:

At this point I don't think the Flames want to make attending a Flames game any less enticing than it already is. I can see why they are doing it, however, Americans are a lot more used to this type of thing since 9/11 than we are. If people have to wait in line to get into the dome, I can see there being even more empty seats.

That's the press entrance. I'd put a metal detector up for most of them too!

I highly doubt standing in line for less than a minute will discourage people from going to games lol.

Agreed. I think there is a fine line. I feel really safe on the couch in my basement with an HD feed, private washroom and cheap drinks.

The searching into purses and other bags do not take long at all. I usually have a back pack and the time it takes to search it is minimal, just come a few minutes earlier. The arena staff and management do not mind if you bring a reasonably sized bag and voluntarily show the contents.

Was at the game last night. The metal detectors were installed but not operational.

No, but the cold weather, bathroom lineups, losing, crappy food, and having to stand in line on top of that could take its toll.

So it's not the metal detectors, but everything else that will keep people away?

The truth is, they've been checking bags all year long already. In the long run, the addition of the detectors shouldn't really slow anyone down - unless you get stuck in line behind someone who brings a pen knife to the game just to stick it to the man.

Yes, they've been checking bags for most of the season, as mentioned earlier. We often bring our daughter, so they usually check the diaper bag we bring in and get to see snacks, sippy cups, diapers and small toys. Last night I went with a friend, left the kid at home and just tossed my ID, STH card and some cash in my jacket pocket and left the purse at home.

Lol. I don't think the Flames will need to worry. Crowds will drop during the rebuild, probably for a combination of the reasons you mentioned, but the crowd they will draw is still very healthy, and is paying full pop for tickets, so its fine.

That's difference between hockey markets and non hockey markets. Hockey markets sell out the building during the regular season when the team is good, and people pay full price for tickets. When the team sucks, they still manage 75% attendance and better, and people still pay full price for tickets.

In a non hockey market, the building sells out in the playoffs, with 30% of the tickets being sold for $10 with a jersey, pop an hot dog. When the team is no good, they only sell 30% of the tickets, all of them going for $10 with jersey's and food included.

Also, I was at the game last night, went through a metal detector, it didn't add any time in line. The only difference is it allowed the sucurity staff that was already there indication on who to search versus doing it randomly or into bags only.
