Woohoo silver!
Was he a legitimate contender in the 1000, or a bit of a surprise?

Heck yes Denny! Amazing. Both him and Groothuis put up ridiculous times compared to last year at Sochi.

From what I have read about the sport, he was a legitimate contender. He has had a great season, but then at qualifiers, he fell 50M from the finish line so the Canadian team sent a different skater. (Because apparently in speedskating, one race determines the team). In any case, the skater who was sent instead of Morrison (Junio) stepped down to allow Morrison to skate.

Sort of. He was an outside medal shot, he has been getting a bit worse each season and some skaters had been coming on strong as of late. Some of the guys in front of him really faltered in this race bad.
Not saying he wasn't a contender, just that the idea of him getting a gold and silver and putting up a time like that was not expected.

Not always the case. Nationals determined who would make the trip since there is a set number of skaters a team can send but there is always the possibility for adjustments in races afterwards.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't really follow speedskating and was just going off of some news stories I had read online.

2nd run of the Luge Doubles in 5 minutes. The Pairs' Free Snore also starts at the same time.

No worries. Speedskating, like figure skating and the sliding sports, is one of the things I follow religiously.

That's pretty insulting, especially with Volosozar/Trankov, Pang/Tong and Savchenko/Szolkowy skating.

Looks like both Canadian ladies are out in Snowboard halfpipe. Scores not high enough to move to the finals. Didn't watch the event, just took a look at the scores.

I didn't say the entire event was a snore. The problem is it is so lengthy for what it is, and you have to sit through about two hours of poor to middling performances before anything good begins.

Not surprising. We don't really have much going for us in SNB pipe in men's or women's. There are a couple of outside shots in ski pipe, but their best chance is for the pipe to continue being terrible enough that it prevents the top guys from going all out and levels the playing field a bit.
