Look it's beginning to sound like I don't like the guy, I like him and I've followed him since we drafted him.
No I didn't read your comment like that at all. But it was a good point about his previous AHL experience and how it didn't work out, I didn't really think about that at all so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Yeah, Finland is the new Quebec for developing goalies. Maybe Leland Irving will pick up a thing or two as well.

Now after tonight, I think its fair game to start Ortio. But you have to give Berra the first crack at the job with Ramo out.
I guess this post is giving me second thoughts on hating Berra's play as of late... He just has been really unreliable, and I don't want our wining streak to end because of Berra's poor goaltending. Maybe he'll play better when he knows he has a chance to be the top goalie again. Otherwise, put in Ortio.

I wish we could find out how he's doing in practice. It's probably a huge adjustment going from ahl to nhl caliber shots.

Yeah and I hope Sven turns into Gretzky. Ortio hasn't played a game in the NHL yet. Lets wait to see to see what we have in him first.

Was our best goalie during the pre season game that I saw. Him and Berra had the best stats at the end of the pre season as well.

For those of you eager to get an Ortio jersey (or maybe it's just me), he's wearing #37 for the Flames.

Can't believe over 4 yrs since I talked with him, but remains one of the best interviews I've done. Great young lad.

I've been rooting for him for a long time; he's had a long, hard road and this opportunity is well deserved.

Yeah well I've seen Ortio play many times. Ortio almost by himself won bronze for Finland in 2009. I've got more hope Ortio/Gillies can be Bernier/Quick than hope Sven can be Gretzky.

I agree let's at least watch them play in the NHL, before heaping expectations on them. However, it's my own personal hope and I don't see how that should effect you in any way. Doesn't mean I'm not more inclined to think they can be very very good. So long as we don't throw them more than they can handle they are going to be very good.

I felt it would be Gillies/Ortio if all worked out even when we still had Brossoit. If he gets a game before the Olympics, I hope our guys play hard in front of him.

That's fair, I just know that when Sven was coming into the league the expectations we had for him were INSANE. I like when people get excited about our prospects but people tend to over value ours. Quick is a Stanley cup winner and now an Olympian. That's very tough to match.

Wes Gilbertson ‏@SUNGilbertson 6m #Flames G Reto Berra gets the start on Long Island. LW Paul Byron will be back in lineup. Kevin Westgarth likely odd man out.

I doubt Ortio gets a start, unless Berra lays an egg.

I'm torn on that. Berra played well yesterday and deserves another start, but I really want to see Ortio

Can't sit Berra after how well he played in Montreal. Even if Ortio doesn't get a start in before he gets sent back down he'll still benefit from practicing with the big club and watching them play every night.

I recall Kipper giving Ortio praise when the Flames drafted him. I want to see this kid get a few games while they can toss him some starts. Coaching staff take advantage of the opportunity of calling him up instead of just letting him warm the bench.

Ya know, Let Berra run with it vs the Isle... If he loses, let Ortio start against Philly and perhaps he steals us one. I think the Philly game will be a tough one.
If Berra does get the W against the Isle, you still go with Ortio. But tell Berra now so he knows its not because of his play, its because you want to have a look at Ortio. But tell Berra that you are going back to him Vs. L.A. so he feels hes trending upwards.

Thats the only way I can see the team maintaining or helping Berra's psychi... (I spell that right?)

Hartley on Goaltenders for tomorrow.

-Felt Berra was confident in Montreal
-Would simply send the wrong message to Berra to not play him again.
-Ortio doesn't have to do anything to impress the coaches to get in a game, they know he had a great camp and that he's capable if needed.

Ortio's thoughts about being with the Flames

I love this about Hartley. No gaming his players; straight up, merit wins. Seems supportive. Like that.
