Byron is one of those players that can play an energy roll and chip in a few points doing it, but he can also catch lightning occasionally and warrant PP or even 2nd line ice time. His versatility will prove to be an asset IMO.

If he maintains his current level of play, I have no problem with him in the top six for a couple of years. I would certainly hope, however, that he is surpassed by the likes of Gaudreau, Baertschi, Poirier, Klimchuk or whoever, by the time we are ready to compete.
That said, I would have nothing against him on the third line on a playoff team, again assuming he maintains or improves on his current play.

Sure if by that time he has improved on his play and is able to produce like needed he can stay in the top 6 but he hasn't shown that he is likely to be at that level.

I think that post is better than your last. We need to at least be open to the possibility that he might develop.

He's an RFA after this season. Any ideas on his next contract?
2 year, $1.1M AAV is my guess.

I think he'll play for cheap and press for a 1-way deal.

I'm a Byron fan too but I'm not sure he'll be around when the Flames are regularly competing for a playoff spot. That said I think there is a place for him on the team next year - He also seems to be a good example for the organization - work hard in the minors, learn from the coaches, show up and compete and eventually earn some quality time in the big league.

Yeah likely a cheap 1 way deal, or more money for a 2-way.......
Byron has been great for sure. Love the way he plays the game.

Byron has done what we need our young guys to do. Learn the game well in the AHL. Positive attitude. Work his butt off. He belongs here until someone 'big' can contribute more than he is right now.

He kind of reminds me of Scott Nichol but with better wheels, hands, and offensive instincts. Byron has that quick burst of speed where he seems to just catch defensemen off guard. It's odd but I never noticed that much from him until recently as he looks so much faster than he did earlier.

Byron's the perfect example of the need for patience with young players. He's now 24 years old and is just really starting to create his identity in the NHL.
Loved what he showed last night. Exciting player to watch for sure.

The "energy line" seems to have gone out of fashion but that's exactly where he fits

Byron was one of those guys I wrote off pretty quickly. I'm glad he's proving me wrong, really like what I'm seeing in his game.

So is it a foregone conclusion that he gets re-signed here next year? I see some of the suggestions on low money 1-year deals, but then what? Is it just a wait and see how he plays?

He's had two straight one-year, two-way deals. I don't think he'll want another one year deal.
My guess is a three-year deal with a cap hit in the $1-1.25 million range.

Give both Colborne and Byron one-year/one-way deals (1.25 to 1.5 mill). It will keep them hungry and they will still be RFAs next season. I would give Bouma a 2 year deal, I don't see him taking his foot off the gas.

He needs to be signed period. I think he gets a 2 year deal at about 1.4M per year. That would give us time to have Jonny Hockey in Abbottsford for a couple years if we needed. I also think Byron would be the odd guy out if Jonny comes in and sticks with the team.
