Because if they think that it is best for Monahan's development to send him to the tournament then being petty over guys not making one of the hardest/most competitive teams in the world is about as stupid as a move as you can make.

If teams were so petty and bitter any time one of their guys got cut from a very difficult team to make the National teams wouldn't have very many players and GM's would be some of the biggest idiots around.

@YYCHockeyfan911 Still think it's more valuable to return to the team he's already helping to lead. #Flames

@Zester76 He's injured and had proven the NHL, and nowhere else, is where he belongs. How is that horrible? #Flames
Actually it is probably better for his development to let him go to the tournament and play some high pressure games. He would miss what, 5 or 6 NHL games? Pretty small price to pay to see what he is like under huge pressure in the tournament

But Feaster's reason for not sending him is legit. The Flames shouldn't be focused 100% on Monahan's development, they should be focused on rebuilding the team and letting Monahan go to the tournament would send the message that this season doesn't matter.

Sean Monahan on not being released for the WJC: "I want to play in the NHL. That was my goal this summer and that happened. For them to want to keep me here, it gives me a little bit of confidence."

Obviously Sean wants to play in the NHL, but lets not pretend these young athletes don't like money. I am sure he is enjoying his hundreds of thousands a lot more than the $400 a month allowance he gets playing for the 67's.

Sean doesn't need to take a step backwards, there is no comparison between the Juniors and NHL hockey. Every game in the NHL is far greater than any competition he will find in any junior setting.

If his response is in fact 100% genuine, which I am assuming it is, I am very happy that he isn't looking back. This decision right here is a great step forward for his development.

Just a few more quotes:

Quote:
"It's a loss with him out of the lineup right now with an injury, so certainly the idea that we'd just release him to go play in the tournament and miss him for six or seven games, that's just something we're not prepared to do," general manager Jay Feaster said Tuesday.
"We spent a lot of time talking about it and we looked at a lot of different things. Obviously it's a tremendous opportunity for a player to be on an international stage, obviously the pressure of representing Canada, and that's a good thing.
"At the same time, there's pressure being a member of the Calgary Flames Hockey Club and playing in front of our fans and trying to win games in the National Hockey League."
Quote:
The 19-year-old called the decision a confidence boost.
"It's a good feeling," Monahan said. "I want to play in the NHL. That was my goal this summer and that happened. For them to want to keep me here, it gives me a little bit of confidence. Obviously it would've been an honor to wear the Canadian jersey and something I'd like to do, but that decision's not up to me and I'm happy with what happened."
And injury update:

Quote:
Sean Monahan, who will miss his third straight game with a hairline foot fracture, is making progress.
"I tried a little skate this morning and my foot's getting a lot better, so I think it's going well," said Monahan, who is listed as week-to-week. "I'm just taking it day by day and it's getting a lot better. It's probably almost 100 times better than it was. It's feeling good and I'm just taking it day by day."

Was Sieloff not released because of injuries or other reasons?

Injuries. They had said they were going to release him before his infection dragged on all season. I don't think he's close to playing yet.

^^^He probably would have been captain if he wasn't injured

Either him or Jon Gillies.

There was a very strong chance that Sieloff would have indeed been named captain. Gillies would not have been though - goalies simply are rarely ever named captains or even assistants. I would be very surprised if Gillies gets an A.
