Wonder how everyone would feel if Emery pulled that on Kiprusoff.

Brutal the ref didn't jump in while Emery is hammering the back of Holtby's head:

Hope Emery gets a suspension to add to the Flyers woes. Dirtbag player for a terrible organization in an armpit of a city.

Love the timing of Burke's article trying to defend crap like that. What a joke.

edit: Seriously, Burke's defending fighting as it's some sort of self-regulation against injuries and dirty plays yet what if the fighting itself is creating injuries and is the dirty play like this situation in question?

I'd be shocked if Iggy, Simon, Mcgratten etc (whoever was on the team at that time) never jumped in. And if they never I'd be just as angry at them as Emery for being a chicken sh1t d- bag.

Rabbit punches (shots to the base of the skull and neck) can cause pretty significant damage to the vertebrae, but those shots by Emery were mostly to the crown and weren't that clean. No doubt he is a crazy good, but there wasn't that much danger there.

Emery fighting a guy that clearly doesn't want to fight is completely bush-league and
pathetic.

It's one thing if the guy has done something to provoke you, but the only thing Holtby had done was stop more pucks than Emery.

I hope he is suspended.

When did Burke ever come close to defending crap like that?

People using this as an example that fighting should be gone from hockey is similar to me using the John Scott hit as an example to get rid of hitting.

Most supporters of fighting realize that was BS and I doubt that many, if any, supporters of keeping hockey in the game support goons jumping guys and taking cheap shots to the backs of their head when they are trying to get away from them.

What exactly is that going to do next time the Capitals play the Flyers?
To add to their great message - Downie is still in the hospital and LeCavalier is hurt with facial injuries.

Man was that ugly. Not a fan at all of that as it's just barbaric. Hockey is a sport that is not affiliated with boxing or MMA and to me this is an embarrassment for the league. I hope they make an example of Emery.

I remember all the fury in the centre of the universe when Scott was attacking and trying to assault beloved Kessel. Same situation, I hope the shock and anger comes up again.

From Pierre LeBrun: @Real_ESPNLeBrun

After looking at it and discussing it internally for last 24 hrs, NHL has decided not to suspend Ray Emery. Simply put current rulebook as it stands doesn't back any suspension for this. Obviously league doesn't like what it saw last night but there's just nothing in rulebook for supplemental discipline for that fight.

I don;t understand why, if Holtby had no interest in fighting, he didn't Turtle once the Ref was there at the start of the fight. He still has his helmet on and the ref could have then ended it quickly.

Yes Emrey should have stopped but Holtby after the first punch tried to fight back and then got worked. As soon as Holtbys back was turned the Ref should have jumped in because it not longer was a fight

That's an absolute joke. That's assault and he's lucky he isn't in jail. Not suspending him is an absolute JOKE. I am all for fighting, but that was a gutless move by Emery. Not quite as bad, but it's a very similar situation to Johnathan Roy in the Q a few years ago.

Um NHL how about intent to injure? It's one thing if there are two willing combatants but when one clearly doesn't want to fight then intent to injure should come into play.

NHL, WWF, MMA, IBF are all 3 letter acronyms.
All these sports have fighting.
All these sports have champions.
All these sports have scheduled match ups.
All these sports have betting.
All these sports have superstars.
Hockey has more than just fighting.

Obviously Ray "Punchy" Emery went too far and his actions were definitely classless, but fighting in the NHL is and always should be a part of it! I'm sure Ray "Punchy" Emery will get his in the games to come. We all have our opinions, but if 98% of the players still want it in the game the spectators including the media that have the opinion that fighting should be out of the game have the wrong opinion.

He does seem to try and skate away but Emery has his jersey. The ref is also standing there doing dick all so once the punches comes he probably figures fighting back is his best shot as the ref has already shown he is going to do zero to stop it whether Holtby wanted to fight or not.

No suspension? He should be thrown in ****ing jail, as should the people using this as another excuse to whine about fighting, that wasn't fighting, it was an assault on an innocent player. Basically the along same as a crosscheck to the back of the head or a slash in the face. The ref should also be disciplined for allowing that to continue.
