Hey, reading a lot of emotion on this thread and its understandable. It feels a lot better to see Phaneuf as a plug after he was given away for next to nothing. The fact is that he was a very entertaining player for the Flames and it took the heart out of the team when he was let go.
If you forget about that and just look at Phaneuf and watch him play today he is certainly a number 1D, not in the top 10 of number 1s but i don't think you can find 20 better then him.
That being said, in hindsight i would take solace in the fact had the trade not happened, the Flames would still probably be what they are today, and perhaps even worse because they would have hung on with the old core for a bit longer and delayed the rebuild.

Off the top of my head:
Chara
Karlsson
Keith
AP
Weber
Suter
Doughty
Subban
Butler
Edler
Letang
OEL
Bouwmeester
JMFJ
Seabrook
Staal
Some of those are debatable. In the area of 20 is about right I would say. Tough to say though - the problem is you have to pay him like a #1 but if he is your #1 - you probably aren't going to win in the playoffs.
Tough player to gauge value on.

You can't really compare Dion Phaneuf to anybody on that list, that's what makes him a special player. Maybe Chara and Subban for a few similarities.
I've always been a big fan of Phaneuf. He's a good hockey story for sure. From the Red Deer Rebels, World Jrs, Calgary Flames and now the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. An original six team. He's already amongst NHL greats just on what he's accomplished so far.
We're lucky to have had him here playing for the Flames. I think he'll get $7 Million if not more.

Wait..what?
I think Phanuef is a very good d-man, but what has he done to be considered amongst "NHL greats" ?
No hardware at the NHL level, has not made it past the first round of the playoffs, has not made the Olympic team..

Two questions:
1. Why not? Everyone compares players all the time, and Dion, whether you think he's a solid 1st pairing guy or not, is certainly not in a league above 95% of those other gentlemen. There is not one thing he does better than everyone else on that list, nor is he a complete enough player to say something like "he doesn't do one thing great, but he does everything well"
2. What has he accomplished? He's a former 1st round draft pick that fell out of favour with his drafting team, was traded to a seemingly miserable Leafs team and named captain by default of being the most notable player on the team. He has accomplishments, but certainly none that propel him to the rank of the NHL greats.
He's a good, solid hockey player. He's not some stud like some people think, nor is he hot garbage like other people think. Is he worth 7? No, and that's why his agent is asking for 7. He's going to take less. That's what negotiations are for. I don't think many players in the history of the game have made their first salary request EXACTLY what they're worth.

He was a finalist for the Calder and the Norris.
3 time NHL All Star
Gold & Silver with the World JRs
Gold in Wold Ice Championships
I would think those are significant along with his pretty consistent play. The only thing left for him really is a Stanley Cup.

Dion is a special player any way you look at it. Like all great players, they just have that extra that you can't teach. When you're talking about great players you can't really compare them to each other as there are just similarities, that's what makes them and separates them from everyone else.

So the only thing left for him to do is win the Stanley Cup? Even though he has not won any trophy at the NHL level?

You said NHL greats, the only actual accomplishment you listed there is "3 time NHL All-Star."
Maybe you were one of those guys who played a sport that didn't keep score, but almost winning a trophy isn't an accomplishment. He has zero real NHL accomplishments.

The key flaw here is that he's not a great player, and he doesn't have those intangibles. As I said, he's good, even I'd take him at 6.5 (not with Wideman around), but if you think he's got those intangibles that makes him one of the greats then I'm pretty sure you haven't watched a Phaneuf game in many years.
