It was a totally different time. And as far as I know, Gilmour didn't ask for a trade, he was jettisoned out because management thought he was done.

Except that Erixon hadn't played a game yet and wasn't going to play for the Flames no matter what. At least Gilmour and Niewendyk had shown they were worth what they were asking. Flames just couldn't pay them.
I don't like that they left the way they did, but it's not close to the same thing.

Do you have a picture of Erixon in a Flames jersey holding up the cup, because I couldn't find one

I don't think Kent or anyone here are/were suggesting that 2nd round picks didn't have value. Like I said, news articles reflect the times and at the time Erixon was a first round pick that was developing nicely and was considered a sure-fire NHL player and potential top 4 defenseman. While 2nd round picks certainly have value, they are what they are: they are "magic beans" that give the team a better than 1/4 chance to draft a decent or better NHL player. Don't get me wrong, I highly value 2nd round picks and have been highly critical of Feaster throwing away 2nd round picks in the past, but that doesn't mean that someone is indefensible for referring to 2nd round picks as magic beans when the team trades what was believed to be a sure-fire NHL defenseman who was ready to contribute.

Gilmour is an entire different stratosphere as he walked on his team mid-season. Unforgivable.

No Gilmour wanted to redo his contract before his existing contract was up. Remember when he freaked out on Mike Toth because he asked him about the money situation? hahaha.
Joey Mullen was jettisoned out because mgmt thought he was done. He can't hear us because of his 2 additional stanley cup rings stuck between his ears.

So if you win a cup with a team, you can completely disregard your signed contract and eff the fans because you are a greedy SOB?

He is just on loan, still listed on the Blue Jackets roster.

Niewenydick is just as bad. SIGNED contract and wont' report to camp because he wanted more money! How can any Flames fan forgive that??!! And for the record, Niewy was my favorite Flame player ever before he pulled that dbag move.
I don't care if we got Iggy. What if the Stars said yes to our original offer and we got Todd Harvey?

Nieuwendyk was bad as he had a valid contract. Gilmour's was worse because he had a valid contract AND it was mid season. Joe was also captain so maybe that's why you think its just as bad. But IMO, Gilmour's was much worse

I'm so happy he got his ass canned from the Stars.
Remember potential GM wannabes. Don't sign Adam Pardy to a 2 year $2million per contract! hahahahahahahaha

What I remember is that Gilmore was unhappy with his arbitration contract because the arbitrator was sitting with Flames management to watch the game prior to the hearing. He felt he didn't get a fair shake.
With Neuwendyk, the way I remember it, before he left Fletcher promised him a raise and Risebrough wouldn't honour the agreement.

Gilmour has to hurt the most. It was SO painful watching him in the Maple Leafs jersey for so many years... Why did it have to be frikkin Toronto, Riser? The city with the most overblown homer media. Every 'That's Hockey' or HNIC broadcast for a decade featured highlights or live examples of Killer's all-star level play, which only served to remind me –daily– of how badly we were fleeced by Cliff Fletcher on that one.

If he traded a 4th round pick for Erixson now, it would look even better
