I agree. His side to side movement isn't quick enough for the speed of the game. Hopefully Malarchuk can improve his game on that level.

Thought it was weird to see the C on Gio, then I realized I just wasn't used to the C so down low in our own zone...
Fun game though.

Anytime we pass the Oilers in the standings is a positive.

Hilarious how good the Caps probably think they are after that win. Absolutely they're the better team but the team that played better did not win tonight. Game was very predictable once they got out to the 3-0 lead. I mean that has happened what, like a dozen times over the last two seasons? Other than a couple 5 minute stretches, the Flames were the better team and worked considerably harder. I was particularly impressed with how they came back after Washington tied it up in the third. Flames dominated the last few minutes and dominated overtime. Caps win the cheap way but good luck with that garbage effort this year against the teams in their new division.
Thought Jones was far and away Calgary's best player tonight. Was great in all three zones.
Ramo was not very good IMO.
Galiardi got better as the game progressed but that penalty cost the team a point. I like how much he gets after it though. I unfortunately think he will take more stupid penalties like that this year. Just the way he plays.
Giordano was really good.
Some solid glimpses from Monahan and Baertschi but not much on which to assess.
Stajan was good. Barely noticed Glencross.
At least the team played hard. At least they are north-south and consistently got to the body. They are not very good and are very rough around the edges, but working hard gets you a long way as we have learned the hard way the last few years.

Can we please spare the "we're better than the Oilers" schtick? I don't think I can go an entire season hearing this. Yes herpes is better than terminal cancer, we know.

it does matter who he's facing, come on now...10 of those shots were from the top goal scorer in the NHL. On average you are facing lower quality shots

I'll take mediocre from a goalie that hasn't played an NHL game in 5 years. He didn't look shaky. Ovechkin scores on every goalie in the league and very few goalies are at their best right at the start of the season.
I expected that Washington would score goals. Didn't expect Calgary to score as many. So, overall pretty positive.
Plan was not to give Washington's hot PP many chances, though - Hartley will not be very happy with how that turned out.

I really enjoyed the game, I'm not mad they lost. But I hope the Flames are mad that they lost and I hope they give the same effort tomorrow.

It's to be expected with a full rebuild going on. We could see more games like this.

He can give the forwards praise for the way they played and how hard they competed in the offensive zone. You need to give compliments where it is due and not just we blew a 3-0 lead and lost the game. You can help them grow with positive reinforcement and not just the Brent Sutter kicking the can routine attitude.

I'm proud of the team. I'd like to see Baertschi, Monahan and Bouma get more minutes.

Could have been worse. We got some lucky bounces and terrile goaltending on our side, Caps got some soft penalties on their side. Pretty fair end result.
In general I liked the new look. Glencross-Stajan-Stempniak managed to keep Ovechkin mostly contained 5-on-5, which is something we'll need a lot this season.
Baertchi-Monahan-Jones were really fun to watch.
Bouma was great. Street was out of his league. Galliardi was up and down.
Russell seemed to fit well with the style the team played.
I really like the mobility of our top 4 D, and really hate the decision making of Butler-SOB.
Rämö was okay. Didn't stop anything crazy, didn't let in any real softies. Generally nice and calm, you can tell that he's got some games behind him, even though not that many in the NHL. Didn't show anything that makes me think he's going to be a long-term starter in a good team though.
Speaking more generally; a lot of mistakes here and there that started to add up at times. We're going to get burned badly on a lot of nights if that keeps up, which it propably will. The effort was very much there, and there wasn't much panic, so that's good. The Caps are not a bad team and they obviously got their train rolling, so the score is nothing to be ashamed about.
What was obvious is that we're going to be wishing for some real top-end veterans a lot of times during this seasons. We just got nothing in the level of Washingtons first line, and that's going to be the case with most teams we'll face.
We'll propably also get a lot of easy starts like that, due to teams not taking us seriously. So basicly I predict that this game is a pretty accurate first impression of things to come.
To sum up:
I like it for what it is. It's rebuild hockey, a team built largely from scraps, biding their time and hoping the boys grow up fast. They gave an effort, got something for it, scored some goals and played a pretty entertaining game of hockey.
Life could be a lot worse for a Flames fan right now.

The Flames-Capitals game was a tie. The shootout is a joke.

Caps are a good offensive team...they scored 4 on Chicago too, I guess they have horrible goal tending and terrible defense too.
they had a chance to win, this year we cant really ask much more

I think there are still some veterans that need new addresses. Some of these guys still don't play with any urgency or put in the effort when the team needs it. I'd much rather struggle some of the kids from the farm than struggle with the veterans giving a half-assed effort.

They're a team made of up of exceedingly expendable players. They all played like they wanted to prove they belong in the show tonight, and there's nothing about tonight's result that should make any of them feel less expendable. So the effort and coachability of the team should remain constant at least into next week.
