I understand rotating the goalies but not before Brossoit gets a chance to round into form. Makes even less sense in hindsight.
They gave Ortio two weeks to work with the coaches in Abbotsford, now they're likely giving Brossoit the same. It's just a quirk of the early season schedule that neither team has played that many games yet.

If they would have waited until both players had played a certain number of games, Brossoit could have been in Alaska for a month or more before going back to Abbotsford.

I see Ortio has been recalled to the Heat and Brossoit sent back down. I know there appears to be a plan to do this but I hope they let things be for both keepers' sake. Ortio and Brossoit are not in the same place in their development. I don't see the harm in Brossoit spending the year in the ECHL but for Ortio it's a huge step down considering he played in the AHL and then spent the last two years in the Finnish Elite League. He has two shutouts in four games in the ECHL. He isn't going to develop there. For Brossoit, iplaying a year in the ECHL isn't so much a sleight and it's a good chance to work on his game and develop his confidence. He may be the better long-term prospect but if they keep sending Ortio down to Alaska every two weeks, I can't see him wanting to stick around.

Development coaches are not good in the ECHL, which is why most players do not develop into NHLers after spending time there.

That helps explain it but I dont' think a few months to a season in the ECHL ruins a 19-year-old's development. Hopefully Joey Mac is moved fairly soon and the problem is solved...until Gillies turns pro.

I feel like it's a different situation with goaltenders.

I agree. It's pretty clear to me that Ramo is better than MacDonald. Trade/Waive MacDonald and bring up Berra. Have both Ortio and Brossoit in the AHL.

Next year, when I believe Gillies will turn pro, the Flames will have to make a decision on who they will cut loose to make room for him.
