Thanks again kunkstyle. I bought both my kids snowboards at Sport Chek this weekend. Boards, boot and bindings package for $195 after instant $30 rebate. I couldn't find anything used on kijiji for less than that. Plus with the trade up program it's a no brainer. Should be getting out this weekend...can't wait.

One other little perk that could affect a couple of people: kids in grade two ski free at Nakiska.

Posting from the Powder Keg lounge at Louise... much better conditions in the WROD than expected. Worth my 39 bucks for a warm up day.

Just one groomer. Top of the chair to the bottom. It's a good warm up situation unless you have to stand in the lift line for 20+ minutes, which is what it's going to be like today.

Did Nakiska on Sunday and Norquay on Monday. Not much open and conditions were meh, but I knew that going into it and had a super fun time anyway. My kids did great their first time out snowboarding, which made me really proud. My son was even doing jumps and wanted me to teach him a 360 lol. Dude is six...he may end up being a little shredder.

Anybody here do any backcountry? I'm looking for some relatively easy/safe runs to cut my teeth on.

Also, are there any hills nearby (say within 3-4 hours) that are more AT friendy? I know whitefish has a lot of people trekking up, and designated uphill routes aw well, but I don't recall seeing anything similar around here.

Lake Louise has a couple of accessible areas just out of bounds (west bowl off of the summit, and the elevator shaft? off of Larch chair). They are both pretty well marked and established from what I remember, though I haven't actually skied either of them. Sunshine has lots of stuff just out of bounds, as well as delirium dive and another inbounds area that require avy gear.

For easy tours, I've done black prince and pocaterra in Kananaskis country. Both are pretty short approaches with some nice skiing. Burstall pass is easy but it's a longer approach. Off of the parkway bow summit is really popular, crowfoot glades is another nice area with an easy approach.

I'm assuming you have AST 1 and full avy gear?

I will before I go. In the process of booking an intro course and AST1.

Good idea. I also suggest a companion rescue course. And obviously don't go alone.

The fact that this part of skiing has been marketed as being trendy scares the crap out of me and I really wish it would stop. ####ing Marker and Salomon with their frame bindings, now everyone thinks they should get skinning. A large proportion of the people out there are hazards, not only to themselves but to everyone. It's one of the most selfish things you can do because the slide you cause making a bad decision is as likely to bury someone else as yourself.

Anyone know a good website to buy some ski goggle from? Looking for something by VZ, Electric or Dragon.

Any recommendations for getting skis tuned/waxed?

Anything I should have done/checked specifically on new skis?

On new skis there is a factory tune and wax, first of all, so if you get those done you're wasting your money.

As far as getting them done later, if you have the room I'd just do it yourself. It's super easy. Just need an iron, some wax and a scraper, basically.

I've had next day service from Snoday in Cochrane. As Yzerman mentioned, get your own gear. You can get the tools and wax for <$100 and can do a full tune in less than an hour. A garage is great, but it can be done over a kitchen sink in a pinch (hint: use saran wrap or a garbage bag to plug the drain and catch the scrapings). Doing it on your own pays for itself after a few tunes, and can easily be done the night before heading to the mountains.

Kuu has tuning manuals online, or I'm sure there's more than enough youtube tutorials.
