I fail to see how calgary is in great shape to foot the bill for the games. Don't we have a few 100 million of flood damage. We are years away from seeing a C train line to the deep south. Seems that there are schools that need to be built, and so on........not to mention the current debt load. Other than those things, we are in great shape.

I agree, Kelowna would have to start from scratch, but I don't think they'd be able to build the Hotels, or support them once the game was over
They do have a nice airport, however
I don't think Kelowna is a serious consideration

That is true, you never Know what Ken can and can't say
It could be just like when he promised us he had the cap room to keep Cami, then turned around and let him go to Montreal

This really depends on the economy.
We had bad recessions in 2001 & 2008. Are we due for another in 2015, and subsequently in 2022? Many believe the worst is yet to come from the 2008 recession - this month congress will vote on raising the debt ceiling yet again amongst other things.
I don't think the olympics aren't relevant anymore either - I'm supposed to care about weird sports that I couldn't care less about any other year? And then pay for it as well? What's lost in the profitability debate is WHO profits? It's large companies at the expense of average citizens. That's corporatism and a great injustice in the West.
If the olympics still want to be put on they should choose their hosts carefully and not ask governments - who are supposed to provide essential services which private companies cannot provide - to fund their private company event.

You know recessions don't necessarily work on a 7 year schedule right?

Canmore would be completely impossible for environmental reasons. Beside that, any of those cities would be doomed to a page in the next version of that picture book of abandoned Olympic infrastructure. Even if the IOC were to go for a smaller Games, you're still looking at things like a 12,000 seat hockey rink, a couple more arenas that seat 5-7,000, athletes villages and other venues that would be hopelessly underutilized afterward.

That's not the point.
We've never dealt with such sovereign debt problems before, public appetite for spending money on entertainment could be vastly different by the time the 2022 host is chosen.

The 2022 host is going to be chosen in July 2015. I doubt anything is going to change significantly in 2 years.

Could we save a few bucks and reuse these two?
It would be great if CGY got the Olympics again. Airport improvement, LRT lines, new world class hockey arena, improved highways, and federal and provincial dollars to boot. Perhaps even a high speed train between Edmonton and Calgary?
Another negative might be that Vancouver hosted in 2010. Only 12 years later and less than a 1,000km away might be too soon on top that CGY would have only hosted three decades and change ago.
Wasn't there a proposal for Edmonton and Calgary to do a joint bid? Edmonton could put outdoor speed skating through their lovely river valley.

Looks like King missed the deadline:
Quote:
LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Six candidates from Europe and Asia -- including two former Summer Olympic host cities -- are in the running to host the 2022 Winter Games.
The International Olympic Committee released the official list of bid cities on Friday after the deadline for applications had passed.
The candidates -- all previously announced in their own countries -- are: Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Krakow, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Oslo, Norway; and Stockholm.

This was confirmed on November 15th, but saying they missed the deadline is misleading.

No Munich kind of surprises me. Krakow as a host would be interesting...I've heard great things about the place. Although hosting the Olympics would probably be the thing that would put it over the edge into becoming a tourist trap.

Almaty would be really cool. Fully admitting ignorance on what needs to be built where in any of the cities, I would most want to travel to Almaty out of the list.

Oslo's nordic events would be held in Lillehammer. Anyone think that hurts them? Oslo is closer to Stockholm then where Stockholm's alpine events would be (Are, Sweden).

Krakow would need a lot of infrastructure to be built but it would be great. Its already a tourist trap.
Racism might be an issue again but less so due to it being the winter games.
