Is he going to be registered with the CKC?
If yes, I would wait to give him a call name til you chose a registered name.
ie. My youngest Golden Retriever's registered name is Auburnmist Glory from Belcanto. Her call name is "Glory"
With our oldest Golden, we kind of did it backwards... we chose a call name first and then chose a registered name. ie. Auburnmist Maximum Overdrive... call name "Ryley"
If we did it over again, I'd probably use "Max" as his call name.
I believe all of the puppies are registered with the CKC, but I didn't know you choose a registered name. I am assuming it's part family? Sounds like a cool idea. My dad has a retriever named Jack - lovely dogs.
Some great ideas here everyone. Thanks for your input. I'll let you know what we choose and post a pic when we get him.
Here are mellifluous mutts and obsessive owners, pampered poodles and persecuted mailmen. Here also is the redoubtable Fugly, the most impounded dog in Australian history, whose wandering, sausage-stealing ways have cost his owner thousands in fines.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that dogs respond best to two-syllable names, because they pick up on the inflection point in the name really easily, so it catches their attention.
That being said, mountain themed, how could you go wrong calling a big dog like that Rundle.

Cheers from across the pond.
Yeah, the pups would be registered by the breeder, as a litter with the CKC and then later the individual dogs would be registered (by the breeder). In the Golden Retriever world, the kennel name comes first in the registered name and then the pups owner choses the rest of name. The total registered name can't be any longer than 33 characters (I believe). The space between each word count as one character.
With regards to my GR's, Auburnmist is the breeder's kennel name. Sometimes breeders go with a theme for litters or a common word that has to be in the registered name that the puppy owner choses. Ie. for Ryley, his registered name had to include the word "over". And then some breeders just use letters of the alphabet to distinguish one litter from another. I used to own a German Shepard Dog who's registered name was Mayfair's Elise. Mayfair was the kennel's name and the pup was from the "E" litter.
