I am sure Gillis and Lou will kiss and make up, but I sure hope not. This saga is a good distraction.

That must be some of the worst trash talk in CP history, I hope he was banned just for that.

Mike Gillis ‘very optimistic’ about Roberto Luongo’s future with Canucks after meeting
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...165117979.html
Quote:
"I feel very optimistic about it," Gillis said (to applause, hilariously), which should placate the fanbase right up until they realize there's a stark difference between optimism and certainty. This thing's not over.
But it does sound as though Luongo is coming around. For one thing, at no point in his conversation with the Canucks' GM did he push the button that drops his guest into the dungeon below his house. It sounds like he never even threatened to.
“I was comfortable there,” Gillis said. “We have a really good relationship so we were laughing for most of it. It wasn’t strained or adversarial at all. Far from it. It was the opposite. I still think Roberto’s working his way through everything that occurred and what happened. I think he’s gonna be fine."
|
Quote:
More than anything, it sounds as though, while the six-year marriage between Luongo and the Canucks is seriously fractured, both sides are willing to start over and take it slow. At times, Gillis describing the meeting had the vibe of a bachelor describing a first date to Chuck Woolery on an old episode of Love Connection.
“It was fun and amiable and it wasn’t stressful or anything," Gillis said. "We talked about the team. We talked about the coaching change and pretty much everything we could talk about. I told him how I felt about him and how we felt about him as an organization.”

Say what you want about Feaster but at least Feaster the man is very likeable. Gillis on the other hand is one of those guys you can't help but chear against. I'm not sure how he survived this whole Luongo fiasco from;
-the absurd contract
-annointing him captain
-removing the captaincy because it was a dumb idea
-declaring the backup at the guy going forward and that Luongo will be traded
-a year later do a complete 180 after he realized he completely misread the market
-trying to convince the goaltender that he told the world wasn't as good as the other guy that he believes he was the guy all along.
If someone was hockey ignorant and never knew about any of this happening over the past few years and just read that now they probably wouldn't believe he still had a job in NHL circles. Yet there he is shovelling more manure towards the media and fans.

I was really hoping they'd trade Luongo because I've actually grown kinda fond of him for handling himself so well during all of this. I wanted to see him do well. But he's still a Canuck so I cannot cheer for him.
Gillis is very lucky to still have a job. One of the worst GMs in the league (so hopefully he gets a lifetime deal).

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 28s CAA Sports, one of the world's top agencies has added another star hky client. Roberto Luongo is now represented by Pat Brisson & JP Barry.

Updated for 2013:
Can you hear the fans Roberto?
I remember last April another sorry night like this
And the red light Roberto
You were muttering to yourself and softly stroking your long hair
I could hear the din of goal horns
And sounds of booing were coming from above
There was something in your net that night
Your eyes were white, Roberto
You were diving there for you and me
For dupery, Roberto
Though I never thought the Sharks could lose
There's no regret
If I had to laugh the same again
I would, my friend, Roberto

Hm. Thats odd. What responsibilities do agents have in addition to negotiating contracts? Luongo isnt going to have to negotiate another contract in this lifetime...

Maybe the agent kyboshed a trade via NMC that doesnt look so bad in hindsight /purespeculation.

Doug MacLean has said on team1040 that Luongo was informed by 'someone' that Florida was going to pursue a trade hence why things didn't go down last summer. Wonder if that 'someone' was his agent.
Good luck to him. Buffalo (Miller and an owner who doesn't mind spending dough) and Pittsburgh (Fleury) could be landing spots if anything is to go down. Maybe Brisson/Berry have been hired to broker a deal.

This situation is getting ugly. Could Vancouver go from two starters to zero in one summer?

Murphy: Does Luongo still want out of Vancouver?
Quote:
Roberto Luongo changed agents and this has to be seen as a shot across the bow of the Vancouver Canucks.
Why else would a guy with nine years left on a contract fire his agent?
This tells me Luongo is not coming to camp quietly (and probably doesn’t want to come at all).
This tells me Gilles Lupien told Luongo that he couldn’t help find him a trade out of Vancouver so Luongo told him he was fired.
This tells me Luongo has now entrusted CAA Sports (JP Barry and Pat Brisson) to find him the trade Lupien couldn’t.
The fact that Luongo hasn’t spoken likely means he’s not looking forward to playing for Vancouver this season.

i was kind of growing to like Roberto for the way that he handled himself so professionally through all this. If he fired his agent that can only mean that he is still mad at Vancouver and that organization, and that he wants a trade. wouldnt it be funny if they went from two to zero starters within a month

His new agents are sure making it sound like Luongo is up to something. Really odd they wouldn't confirm Luongo would be at training camp:
http://www.theprovince.com/sports/ho...medium=twitter
Quote:
Prominent player agent J.P. Barry and partner Pat Brisson of CAA Sports will be taking over the representation of Roberto Luongo, but Barry couldn't confirm that the Canucks goaltender will be reporting to training camp.
Reached Wednesday, Barry said he and Brisson are in the process of familiarizing themselves with Luongo and his contract after the goalie severed his ties with agent Gilles Lupien.
“We've got a bit of work to do to get up to speed and listen to Roberto and then talk to Mike (Canucks GM Gillis) and Laurence (assistant GM Gilman),” said Barry, who also represents Daniel and Henrik Sedin.
Barry said he would leave it to Luongo to comment on his reasons for changing agents and his intentions for training camp.
“He's under contract,” said Barry. “We have to give him advice about his contract. Part of the job is to explain the issues of the contract.”
Barry said he hopes to meet with Gillis and Gilman next week

My memory of yesterday's event is hazy but I'm sure Gillis was asked if he thought Luongo was going to show up for camp in the right frame of mind to help the club move forward. And Gillis responded I don't know. Might have to dig out the tape from last night.
Either way it is not all roses, sunshine and unicorns in Canucks land these days.
Luongo wanted out after 2010 and I'm betting he still does.

Suppose he does come to camp with an open mind - what happens when he put up a string of sub par games or just a big stinker? Hard to believe all this garbage won't come to the surface every time.
