Not sure if anyone read this, but it really makes me wish the Flames select Sam Reinhart if they get the chance to do so:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=685953&print=true

Quote:
"He has a complete game at both ends of the ice," NHL Central Scouting's Peter Sullivan told NHL.com. "He does everything well. He won't get you overly excited, but from a coaching perspective he's the guy you always want on the ice in critical situations. He's your go-to guy and team leader and is just going to be consistent at the junior level and, eventually, the pro level."
Sounds a heck of a lot like the type of players Calgary is keen on acquiring - having him and Monahan in the top 2 center positions, with Backlund in the 3rd would just be almost perfect. 3 guys that really drive possession, have high hockey IQ, and great at both ends of the rink (though Backlund needs to show a bit more offensively, he really drives possession). Sounds so much like Monahan.

I like Backlund but I think he'll be better suited on wing, perfect 2nd line player.

I actually really like him at center - he is very fast, and his CORSI stats are really good. If he can just bring his offensive game up, I think he would make a really great 2nd line center. His defensive awareness is really great I think, and he will make a very good 3rd line center moving forward IF he doesn't develop his offensive game further. Just my opinion though - and it really depends on what other players the Flames draft in the upcoming seasons, and how their current prospects continue developing (like Jankowski and Granlund especially).

Sammy and Monahan would be a great 1 2 punch with Backlund making a terrific third line center.

Anyone following the OHL know whats up with Blake Clarke?

Really bad start to the season so far 2pts in 8 games after posting 51pts in 68 games last season.

Had an interesting back story too, was healthy scratched repeatedly in the USHL until he joined the Battalion and broke out.

Was compared to James Neal by scouts.

edit: found out he is suffering from a shoulder injury.

For something a little closer to home, Zenon Herasymiuk's 'From The Dub', taking a look at some of the WHLers that have caught his eye in the past 30 days:

Quote:
With the Western Hockey League season in full swing, draft eligible players from Brandon to Portland have had their chance to make some early impressions on scouts as they work towards the 2014 NHL Draft.

One player that has quickly solidified his status as a first round prospect is Conner Bleackley of the Red Deer Rebels.

Bleackley is a strong two-way center that has shown growth in several areas of his game. Playing under the watch of Brent Sutter seems to have really ignited the forward who has jumped, not only to the Rebels’ first line, but also to the top of the team’s scoring list.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I believe that if we have the option, we should look at Ekblad over Reinhart.
Certainly I am not dismissing the skill set of Reinhart. But I look at our defence, from the prospects in Junior to the ones already on the Flames. And I am struck that we don't have anyone who looks like a #1 guy anywhere.
At least at Center we have Monahan, and maybe Jankowski in a few years if he continues to develop the way they hope.

Ekblad would fill that hole we currently have at Dman.

Ekblad would be nice but it will be hard to out suck the Oilers, Sabres, Panthers, Flyers, and Rangers.

Gotta go with bpa, not by position. It isn't guaranteed that Jankowski will translate to the NHL game so if Reinhart is the better all around player you have to pick him. Though I agree with others that teams in the east will suck worse than us so it's a moot point. But at this stage bpa over positional drafting.

Ekblad among those representing the OHL in the Subway Super Series:

Quote:
Aaron Ekblad, second in Future Considerations October ranking for the 2014 NHL Draft, will be highly featured in the exhibition. Ekblad is a dynamic force and is effective as offensively as he is defensively, punctuated by six goals and 13 points in 14 games this season.

Also of note, Alexis Vanier and Daniel Audette (son of Donald), will represent the QMJHL:

Reinhart the lone first-time eligible representing the WHL:

Quote:
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward the lone first-time draft eligible representing the WHL. Reinhart is currently second in Future Considerations’ November ranking for the 2014 NHL Draft. He will be joined by Colby Cave and Kootenay Ice teammate Jaedon Descheneau, who went undrafted in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Looks good. Was worried about smurfs being there when we pick but from what you sum up looks like some good sized CHL players will be available when we pick. Keep us updated.

Mckeown, Fleury and Virtanen would be solid, solid additions.

Draisaitl and Dal Colle seem to be putting up pretty nice draft year numbers so far, but no idea what their games are like. Draisaitl is also already NHL size. I still want us to pick up a 1A/1B for Monahan while we're drafting "high".
