Numbers-wise he is a significant upgrade on Butler. Same age, more experience, better stats & half the price.

Russel wtf seriously, well at least Feaster traded away one less long term project pick. Wasn't Russel just put on waivers a couple days ago and he gives away a 5th?

Ship him off at the deadline for picks. Some team will always be looking for depth on the backend at the deadline.
This is the right direction. Stay away from deals longer than 3 years.

Unless he has a better season than he has had in the past i doubt the flames could get their 5th round back at the deadline.
For those saying that Russel is better than Butler, then you have not seen Russel play. At best they are both 5-6 d-men, something the flames seem to have plenty of.
I don't like this move because it probably means that Cundari and Breen will be with the heat.

Sure you can get a pick for him at the deadline. Cheap, low risk depth for some team. If he picks up his game even a little bit, you probably can get a fourth or even a third out of a trade.

How do you figure he's half the price? You're expecting Butler to sign for 3 million? That seems highly unlikely.

Really disagree.
He's a 5/6/7 guy in a different mould than Butler. More offensive, not as good of a backskater, less physical (hard to find a guy less physical than Butler), but a better 'producer'.
Butler on the PP is bad because his puck handling is terrible. Someone's gotta play some PP minutes on the point now that Bouwmeester is gone.
Also, I think you can get a 5th or prospect back for him at the deadline if he's done anything but play himself off this roster. John Scott got a 5th two years ago for his particular set of skills.

Wonder which other options backed out from the Flames of the same ilk to go back St. L after the fact?

I think Cundari will have a greath shot to be on the team.
Breen hasn't earned a spot (due to a rough year last year), so this can be his year to prove it.
Wideman - Gio
Brodie - Cundari/Smith
Butler/O'Brien - Russell
Breen
While I would have liked a bigger upgrade than Russell, for the 1yr deal, doesn't hurt.
Worst case we sit some guys in the pressbox or throw someone on waivers & lose them if the young guys really impress.

Sense.... This does not make any. Why not just pick him up on waivers? Hope feaster addresses this or something.

Does he play like he cares?

Have to think that they had an alternate in mind when he was on waivers, and when that fell through, they decided to swing back around and grab him.
Either way, 5th rounder for a guy that will play in your lineup is gravy.

Perhaps not wanting to give up our waiver position for a guy 29 other teams didn't want.

If he was waived already, can't he be sent to the minors at any time? Good injury replacement, if he was picked up on waivers, wouldn't he be guaranteed a roster spot? Clarification?

Any chance that St. Louis is keeping some of his salary? When Pittsburgh traded for Jokinen right after he passed through waivers last season, it was because some salary was retained.

We have too many defensemen now. 8 NHL-ready for only six spots. Someone is going down to Abby, and it better not be Cundari.
