I've never been on a Sens message board, but are fans rioting over the fact that Murray didn't get so much as a 7th rounder for Alfredsson?

Not on a Sens message board, but from Facebook, Reddit and seeing people out and about, the only person I've seen anyone upset with is Melnyk for not wanting to spend to the cap (and that was just one comment). Most people seem a bit disappointed and a little ambivalent towards his future. I haven't noticed any of the strong reactions that we saw with the Iginla situation. Although, maybe the fans on HFBoards would be a little more emotional on the subject.

Swedish Expressen is reporting that Alfredsson didn't get the offer he expected from Ottawa Senators so he picked up the phone and called Henrik Zetterberg (This apparently took place a few days ago).

The newspaper also writes that when Sens realised that they were about to lose Alfredsson they offered him a blank cheque. Alfredsson's American agent calls it an "odd proposal".

In another article Alfredsson says that he is "doing this for myself [...] Ottawa is getting closer and closer to a Stanley Cup but I feel that I can't wait any longer. It ended in a pretty selfish decision"

Friedman has an article about the Alfredsson situation, as usual, it's a great read:

This article almost makes it sound as if Chiarelli nixed the Alfredsson deal when he got the call from Iginla's agent. It doesn't make much sense to choose Detroit over Boston if you're #1 aim is to win the cup. Does it?

Hmm Alfredsson admits he helped the Senators circumvent the cap:
http://nhl.si.com/2013/08/15/did-dan...?sct=nhl_t2_a2

Quote:
“When I did my last contract, ending in the 2012 season, I was asked to help the team manage the salary cap by adding on an extra year to my contract. I agreed. Each side fully expected I would retire and not play the 2012-13 season.”

His salary last season was just $1 million after three years of $7 million, $7 million and $4 million. His cap hit over the life of the deal was $4.875 million, but without the effect of that cheapie fourth season, it would have been $6 million.

That difference wouldn’t have put the Senators over the cap in any of those first three seasons, but as the New Jersey Devils can attest, attempts at circumvention aren’t taken lightly by the league, especially when it comes to deals that include wink-wink retirement years at the end. In fact, the current CBA includes specific language crafted to prevent exactly this sort of calculated transgression from occurring.
Although it sounds like the NHL won't do anything about it:
Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris 1m Bill Daly says mutual understanding on Alfredsson's previous contract amounts to circumvention, but doesn't think looking back is productive

And of course Murray says Alfie's version of events aren't true:

http://www.ottawasun.com/2013/08/15/...-events-untrue

Quote:

Murray, who felt Alfredsson “threw him under the bus during his news conference, confirmed Alfredsson asked the Senators for a one-year deal at $7 million and a two-year deal at $12 million. The club offered one year at $4.5 million.
“I can say this: I’m disappointed,” said Murray. “It seems Alfie isn’t totally informed of what went on. That had to do with J.P. (Barry) didn’t tell me the truth during the week. He kept saying ‘I can’t get in touch with Alfie. I will get back to you with a number.’
“He never got back to me. I never heard back from him after the phone call on Tuesday (before free agency). Alfie called me himself on Thursday night to tell me that he was leaving. I said to J.P. during the earlier conversations I can’t pay you $7 million. That’s what they asked for for the year.
“I offered $4.5 million. I said, ‘Both of us hopefully are flexible and we will talk.’ (Barry) said he would get back to me. I just took for granted that would happen and it never happened. I never heard back. I have not J.P. since the $7 milliion (demand in New York) Saturday meeting we had. It was $12 million for two years and $7 million for one. That’s disappointing.”
Quote:
Two years ago we promised to extend his contract? When we did the contract originally I don’t know any reason why I have to tell anything other than the truth. I’m 70-years-old you think I care what happens?,” said Murray.
“He said we asked for another year to make it cap friendly? He asked for a four year deal with up front money. It so happened there was the fourth year at $1 million. Both of us talked and he certainly didn’t anticipate playing and J.P. didn’t anticipate him playing so I said, ‘That’s fine.’

I wonder what the Devils think of the cap circumvention. They lose two draft picks and $3M.

Yeah, if I was the Devils I'd be pretty pissed about this being brushed aside. The NHL either needs to treat everyone equally, or give them their picks back.

Should the flames be charged the same thing?

Here's the deal with the Kovalchuk contract: It was so beyond the pale of an acceptable and defensible contract, it was rubbing the league's nose in circumvention to the point where they had no choice to fine and discipline one of their teams, something they would be generally be adverse to.

Ticky tack bs in the final year is one thing. Kovalchuk's and Luongo's deals are a whole different matter.

Edit: Also, Alfredsson actually played that contract out, vs. a situation like Kipper and Calgary where that final year was clearly for circumvention and it looks like he won't play it out.

In the end whether it was agreed upon or not, since Alfredsson played there is no cap circumvention. They can't punish a team for this because if it was appealed the league would easily lose since the player fulfilled the contract.

Yeah not sure how you could fine them for cap circumvention now when Alfie actually played out that final season at $1 Million.

Alfreddsson sure is doing a good job of turning that entire fan base against him though.

Why both sides are even discussing this in the media makes no sense to me, though I do understand why the side to respond (Murray I believe) would feel the need to responsd.

Really? I feel like the majority of the fan base is on Alfie's side on this one. He is making the Sens management look like clowns.
