I think Richards is outraged that he didn't get bought out too. He had the NHLPA's Bob Goodenow lifetime achievement for best compensated player award all to himself until his former team mate just took it from him.

A team with huge goaltending and defence issues pays big money on a centreman.
Genius.

Does this mean Lecavalier is making more than Ovechkin? I mean, Ovechkin probably passes him on endorsements and stuff. But with how much the Lightning and Flyers are paying Lecavalier combined....Daaaammmn!

The Flyers must have some other significant moves upcoming...perhaps moving either B Schenn or Couturier.

Do the Flyers just synthesize cap space?
Always seems like they're make huge signings.

Definitely don't have problems throwing money around:
@DownGoesBrown: If my math is right, since '07 the Flyers signed contracts totaling 61 years and $374.5M with six players who won't play for them this year.
@DownGoesBrown: That would be Weber, Richards, Carter, Briere, Bryzgalov and Pronger. That seems... crazy, no?

You gotta admit this stuff is entertaining though. They should allow every team 1 compliance buyout per year, imagine the comedy.

People have finally stopped including them as a team who the Flames should emulate to rebuild.
Cap Hell is what describes the Flyers. They traded away all of their good players, had to buy out their new #1 goalie, AND still deal with Briere + Pronger payments.

Being a Flyers fan has to be the biggest roller coaster ride of any NHL team. I was initially surprised but only initially because this is such a Flyer move. How many players are left from the team that played in the Finals a few years ago? Heck how many goaltenders have come and gone since that series? They try as hard as anyone but they never win the cup.

I have a feeling it's going to be very hard to re-sign Giroux.

The Flyers seem to draft well, acquire young talent well then blow it up for fun with free agents while trading away all the young talent so they can win elsewhere. Good on them.

Any chance Morin plays for the Flyers this year? Wouldn't surprise me at all if that's what they had in mind.

I imagine the plan is to fill the rest of the roster with players on ELC's. They must be close to the cap ceiling again?

Crazy deal.
It's like they had a hole burning in their pocket with the cap space they gained by buying out Bryz and just had to spend it on someone.
Like others have said, hopefully the Flames can snag someone on the cheap.

What would give you that opinion? If anything, the Flyers have proven quite capable of signing players to long, lucrative contracts.

With the buyout money, how the hell do you motivate this guy? Way too much, for too long.

Holmgren is lucky the Preds matched his offer sheet for Weber.
This contract wouldn't have been possible. Feaster is still getting crucified for going after Richards, yet Holmgren bought out 6.5m for 2 years on Briere in salary, then throw in Bryzgalov, Bobrovsky wins the vezina, Carter & Richards get traded and win a cup, Pronger still isn't playing....
Holmgren is bat**** crazy. Scott Hartnell is now their highest cap hit at forward. I hope teams offer sheet the crap out of Giroux, Couturier, & Schenn.

He has achieved:
1 cup in 2004 (He was dominant in game 7, but it should have been over in 6)
1 Rocket Richard Trophy in 2007 (52G)
zero MVPs, zero scoring titles
only the one 50+ goal season, only one 100+ point season
only five seasons 30+goals, only three seasons with 1+ point per game
will he be a Hall of Famer? He is already 33.
Has anyone been paid so much for so little?
Dipietro did far less but was paid wayyy less too.

Never looked at it that way. Makes you appreciate that #12 never saddled us with outrageous contracts. In-spite of his personal accolades.
