He has lots of option IMO. When the GM says publicly that he won't be back in the fall, he has hand.

Till the other goalie gets traded and it's obvious the intent is for him to be back in the fall. Then the hand is gone.

Isnt that what Tim Thomas did?
This stinks for the Canucks. Huge risk. Putting a lot of faith in his continued professionalism, notwithstanding there has been very little te other way.
I wonder if Gillis doesnt end as a sacrificial lamb here.

The only hand he has is to try and convince them to buy him out. Good luck with that. He might not be happy, but he is a pro, and is not going to sit out the year.
Maybe he gets bought out next year if they perform badly.

Thomas retired, he's not getting paid
it would be up to the Canucks if they wanted to count the years if he sat out, they don't have to

How does it end.
Imagine a sleezy looking restaurant. Gillis and Luongo sitting across from each other in a booth, they've both order a plate or french fries, sorry freedom fries.
"I'm too sexy" by right said fred plays on the speaker softly in the background.
A old lady walks in and glares at Gillis.
A guy in a hat glares at Loungo as he makes his way to the can.
A car pulls up in front of the restaurant and the passenger window starts to roll down.
And we go to credits.

The player asks for a trade and the two parties agree to go their separate ways. The divorce decree is basically written and just needs a signature (trade) for over a year. Now one side decides to reverse course even though the other side had put his house (condo) up for sale, says his goodbye and does not plan on returning. Going to be some serious fence mending on one side and extremely uncomfortable on the other. I don't see this ending well. Kind of feel sorry for Bingo Bango who reportedly handled an awkward situation like a true professional and was a good teammate from all accounts. Well, he is a Canucklehead after all so I don't really feel badly for him/them in the grand scheme of things.

The Canucks sign him to a 3 year extension.

I think Lou sticks it to the nucks and sits until he is traded or bought out.

This would be reasonable, all things considered. I hope he does it.

The one thing I don't get about all this is, why doesn't Luongo just put all this extra effort he spends being unhappy and not liking being set for life into being a better goalie.

Lifetime Suspension

I think that with Sochi coming up Luongo may have more incentive to play for the Canucks. If this would have been the year adter the Olympics I could see Luongo retiring. Take a year off. Spite the Canucks who spurned you then un-retire.
I can see this debacle resulting in more changes to the next CBA. More upfront guaranteed money but options for the team to cut or buyout players at a lesser cost. As much as I love the impact the Luongo mess is having on the Canucks, it doesnt help the game overall. Id rather see 7uongo playing elsewhere and th Canucks paying a finanial price.

If he refuses to play his contract is automatically voided, isn't it? I.e. same as a buyout but without him getting any money. I don't think he'll do it.

and he wouldn't be able to sign anywhere else
anyone thinking he won't report doesn't understand how contracts work
it would effectively end his NHL career

You're assuming that Gillis would suspend him. I don't see that happening either. Why would Gillis, who created this mess, shut down Luo and leave himself with no goalie, and himself as a complete failure as a GM?
Petty, selfish, and completely counter-productive

If he refuses to play, it would be even more counterproductive to keep paying him.
If a player refuses to play, that doesn't void the contract. His contract is simply tolled — i.e., he has to make up the missing time at the end of the deal. That's what happened to Alexei Yashin when he held out on the Ottawa Senators.
Of course, a tolled contract is as good as any other contract for tying up a player's rights. So Luongo could, in theory, refuse to report to the Canucks, and they wouldn't have to pay him until he did. But as long as he sat out, the clock would be stopped on his contract, and when he finally did return, he would owe the Canucks just as many years as when he walked out. And he would not be able to play for any team in a league that has a transfer agreement with the NHL.

Regardless it doesn't nullify his contract, he could either toll the year or not (which he wouldn't), but the remaining years on his contract would still remain. He would be suspended so that the Canucks don't have to pay him, but if they didn't the contract wouldn't just disappear. Luongo (who is still an elite goaltender) doesn't get paid and the Canucks don't have a #1 goaltender, it is a lose-lose proposition.
Pretty obvious really.
Edit: what he said.
