My biggest hope is Barkov. Either he magically falls to us, or the Flames are able to trade up to get him without selling the farm.
Biggest fear - I don't have any really. My only fear would be to have that pick moved in exchange for a player - but not a chance that is going to happen I would suspect.
Biggest wish: I do hope the Flames use this draft to really start plugging holes in the organization. This is a deep draft, with great players all over the board. Would love a C, RW and a D with the first 3 picks - if possible, without bypassing the next BPA.

Drafting Nichushkin would be a complete 180 from their supposed draft strategy.

I noticed you have stated this in another post somewhere. Out of curiosity, what is it about Nichushkin that you think deviates from Weisbrod's profile? Not saying you are right or wrong, just curious what makes you feel that way.

My biggest hope is that the first 5 GM's to pick get forward happy or have some sort of crippling aneyurism and somehow Jones falls to #6.
Realistically, I'd be happy with any of Monahan, Lindholm, or Nichushkin at 6, and straight BPA for the other two picks. If one of those is Fucale, so be it.
My biggest fear is that we spend both picks 22 and 28 to move to #4. I'd rather keep the two extra lottery tickets.

I'd prefer they don't take a goalie in the first round at all but if they do take Fucale it better be with one of the later picks.

What if we were able to keep the 6th along with it though?

hope: we hit 3 legitimate home runs with our first round picks. we stop trying to cut corners in a franchise rebuild.
fear: we do what we have done; trade down, go off the board, take other team's junk, dump our own assets for limited return.
prediction: cp will melt down no matter who we take or when we take them.

One of my bigger fears is that Feaster trades up a couple of spots with the other 2 picks, but then picks Monahan anyway. It's probably unreasonable paranoia though.

He is big, good vision, competes and works hard with an exceptional skillset.
I don't understand the problem IF they believe he is committed to playing the NHL. If he is not, obviously that should be the stopper.
Still think he will be gone before Calgary picks.

Hope: We trade 28 and roster player to move into top 5. We take Barkov and Monahan for a 1-2 punch down the middle.
Fear: We draft.. G, D, RW in that order

Awful. Just AWFUL.
Looking ahead, this is what the Flames have to look forward to.
Wideman - Brodie
Giordano - Butler
Smith - Cundari
Sarich
Yup, essentially zero change. So once again, we can expect Calgary's defence to be awful in the 2013/2014 season.
But wait, there's light on the horizon...
Brodie - Wotherspoon
Sieloff - Morrissey
Ramage - Cundari
Breen
If Calgary manages to land someone like Morrissey in the first round on Sunday, this is the d-corps they will be able to ice in the 2014/2015 season. This would be a huge boon for this franchise, but in order to make it happen, they need to trade away guys like Wideman, Butler, Giordano, Sarich and Smith.
My biggest hope for this draft is that Feaster somehow figures out how to move these guys out to make room for the kids.
|
Don't count your chickens before they hatch. In all likelihood, only 2-3 of Wotherspoon, Sieloff, Morrissey, Ramage, Cundari, and Breen stick as legitimate NHLers, let alone top-4 guys. The Flames need to draft a couple more stud defencemen (probably in the top 15) before our d-core projects as anything but terrible.

From Feaster's comments, the Flames priorities are top centre, checking centre, d-men. I think they'll look to patch RW with UFA(s).

Fear is going off the board at 6 to pick someone like Fucale or seeing us package young assets to chase a big name player.
Hope is moving up with the top pick without breaking the bank, or packaging the other two picks to move up into the top 15 and grabbing a second blue chipper like Domi or Shinkaruk.

Personally, I would be very happy if the Flames end up drafting him. Though he is not a center, I see him having the most potential after MacKinnon. Some scouts feel he could be the best forward in the draft period (though those are not many), but most feel he is a legitimate top 5 talent that belongs in this year's 'elite 5', and thus I would have absolutely no problem if the Flames draft him either.
I was just wondering why Estrada doesn't feel Nichushkin fits with Weisbrod's definition. Far as I can tell, Flames want 'high hockey IQ', size, speed and skill who are difficult to play against. Seems to fit that criteria, unless I am missing something, and thus my curiosity.

Nichushkin is an intriguing prospect. If all things did work out, a top line of Bartschi-Jankowski-Nichushkin could be a very imposing attack. It would be nice if the Flames could snag another big pivot like Gauthier and then have a second line of Gaudreau-Gauthier-Granlund/Backlund. Another well balanced group on paper and give the Flames a size advantage down the middle when you add in Knight and a couple of the other prospects looking to fill in the bottom lines. They could the use the 28th to snag a defender to compliment Brodie. Things wouldn't look so bleak. The whole KHL thing still scares me, but I can see the logic of drafting the Russian.

Hope: I dreamed about Monahan last night and I woke up feeling better then ever about him being on our team. I think he is the Flames #1 target with the 6th pick. I also hope that 5 years down the road, we end up with 3 impact players who really turn the fortunes of the team around
Fear: Nichuskin. While I don't doubt he could be an elite talent, the gamble is just too great. And you seriously have to factor in the hockey gods as well; If something can go wrong for the Flames, it will. Mark my words, something bad will happen if that kid is drafted for Calgary...
Also, picking up a goalie in round 1 would make me feel like that pick was wasted, when it could easily turn into a first line player.
