My work has been very supportive of anyone who has to miss work because of being evacuated or because they couldn't make it on Friday, and will allow people to leave work as needed to volunteer (using vacation time to account for it). However, they have told us we need to make up the time we lost on Friday by working extra hours and I'm not very pleased about that. There was no way I was gonna attempt to head out on the roads the way they were, and I can't work from home.

FWIW, Nenshi in one of his pressers this morning advised that the light synchronization is offline within the city and is causing massive traffic problems city wide. If possible, they recommend working from home for the next couple of days.

For anyone who is working downtown, what are things like in terms of shops, food courts, etc being open? (I know its not important but am curious if I have to return tomorrow.)

Stores/restaurants with outside entrances all seem open. +15 not so much. (from what I've seen in West Downtown)

Does this mean they aren't working at all, or just not syncing with each other over distances (ie on default timers)?

The Core had some stores open and the food court was open. Bankers Hall has no stores or food court open. Gulf had the Wendy's, Tim Horton's and the Extreme Pita open.

I'm under the impression that the synchronization is essentially city wide and can "read" traffic and adjust lights accordingly. That system is down, thus things just running on default, and not being the most effective.
They also recommended using transit/carpooling, etc. when at all possible.

Any where to find out what transit routes are open into downtown on an ongoing basis?
We just got Internet connectivity back this afternoon, so I am thinking there might be a push to get people back into the office. I refuse to drive down though as it will just compound the problem.

I just got word that I'm expected back at work tomorrow, too.
With traffic being what it is - I'm thinking I might ride my bike. Its been about 8 years since I was active in bike-commuting. All that stamina, wind, and power stays with you for 8 years, right?

Our office is open tomorrow for skeleton staff, but rest of us aren't to come back until Tuesday (90% of us are already off this Friday). I"m hoping I can go volunteer somewhere on Thursday.

My office in Bankers Hall opens Wednesday but they cut core hours (10am to 3pm) to account for commuting issues.

Our building in the belt line is still without power. So another day at the home office. Their hoping we have power restored by end of day tomorrow so we're back in on Thursday... but who knows, beyond our control.

My wife works at Livingstone Place & have been told not any earlier than Friday for access. Power & IT support to be restored sometime tomorrow - so most employees that have critical or deadline driven tasks to try to get done Thurs/Fri via remote desktop.
For myself this is an example...
Update – Expectations until further notice
We've been asked if we can work via VPN to please do so - however as building doesn't have power access via remote desktop doesn't work & therefore no shared drives.....
however, your safety and security are our utmost concern and we hope that you are staying safe. We will continue to keep a very close watch on the situation and will continue to communicate with you as things progress throughout this week.
Office Status: Downtown offices in Calgary are still closed and employees should stay home until further notice.
Access to downtown: The City of Calgary, Mayor Naheed Nenshi and CEMA have requested that only building owners and managers access the downtown core until the all clear has been given; many streets downtown are still closed, some traffic signals are not operating and transit has not been fully restored. They want to keep the congestion to a minimum so they can continue working on the restoration of power and cleanup. Please monitor the City of Calgary www.calgary.ca and the local news for the latest information.
