I don't know. There's a good crop of UFA goalies this year, I could see the flames going after some.

Feaster, take notice if you are tempted to draft Fucale or any goalie in the 1st round

However if they hadn't gotten lucky with Quick then Bernier would be their franchise goaltender. Which would've been a fine way to spend a 1st rounder.
And as it stands he still looks like a better pick than guys like Helenius, Wishart, Mitera, Fischer, Sanguinetti, Persson, Irving, Vishnevsky, Summers, and Corrente and arguably better than some of the guys that did turn out (Sheppard). So he's easily one of the best 20 picks in that first round, maybe top 15. The only player taken after him in the 1st that is significantly better IMO is Claude Giroux and LA could've taken him with the other 1st rounder instead of Trevor Lewis.
Getting a successful goalie is still a better result than picking a bust or fringe NHLer. Bernier was a decent pick and certainly doesn't prove that taking goalies in the 1st is a bad idea. People seem to forget that forwards and d-men can bust just as easily.

Fair trade. Frattin has potential. I definitely don't agree with the poster who claimed he's a career minor leaguer. He's a big guy with wheels and a shot. Scrivens is a solid backup too.
I wish the Flames had the pieces to score Bernier.

It's as fair a comparison as saying don't take a goalie because X happened.
And the point is that it isn't like a forward or defenseman is going to work out with the same pick so silly to say don't take a goalie because bernier only got X. As FDW that is a lot better than many of the forwards/defenseman could get taken around the same spot. So kings are likely ahead by drafting Bernier.

Odd deal for the leafs, considering Reimers solid play. Didn't cost them a kings ransom however, so it's not as tho they are stuck with untraceable assets.
Calgary's goaltending situation is a huge question mark right now. I have little faith (or knowledge) in Berra, and Ramo left the NHL once already because he either couldn't cut it or didn't like it. Neither are positive reasons for Calgary

So the Kings traded a 2nd round pick and Bernier for Regher, Fratten and Scrivens.

Has this deal been confirmed? Given the relatively low price, I can see this being a figment of the imagination of leafs nation.
Great deal for Leafs if it has been confirmed.

Well, I found out about it via text message from TSN, so I'm leaning towards it being confirmed.

It seems that every now and then, starting goalies become available and the price is much lower than it is for d men and forwards. It doesn't really make sense to me, but hey, it is what it is.

Seconded
Never draft a goalie in the 1st round. Bernier has developed as well as expected, its not like he's a bust or anything.

The Leafs would have beat the Bruins if not for the Luongo like collapse Reimer had in Game 7.

This seems like a fair deal to me. Everyone knows that Kings need to trade Bernier, but they still get an a quality back-up goalie in Scrivens, a young power forward type in Frattin with a lot of upside that serves as a cheap replacement for Penner, and a second rounder. The Leafs get the best piece of the trade in Bernier who looks like he could be the first legit #1 goalie in Toronto since Ed Belfour.
I will say the Leafs have certainly been getting the better of their trades recently. - JVR for Schenn
- Lupul and Gardiner for Beauchemin
- The Phaneuf deal
- Franson and Lombardi for Lebda and Robert Slaney
- Grabovski for a Greg Pateryn and a second rounder
- Mark Fraser for Dale Mitchell
- Liles for a second rounder
- Also grabbed Frazer McLaren off of waivers
I suppose they needed all these wins after losing big on the Kessel deal.

Not to be a backseat GM but if this was the price tag why weren't we involved? Or maybe we were who knows.
|
Kings not only didn't want to move Bernier to Calgary or Edmonton, they wanted assurances from any team they did move him to that he wouldn't end up getting flipped to a division rival.

I have heard that Dean Lombardi, more then any other GM, never wants to deal any players within a division. (more willing to deal draft picks)

Have to wonder though, why didn't they do this at the deadline when it was apparent that Kipper was not going to go to Toronto? If Bernier is in net for game 7 we aren't watching the Bruins in the finals. Nonis was a ditherer in Vancouver and is continuing the pattern in Toronto.
