LOL, "later this year" - for a moment I thought they would drop the date.

Exclusives should be against the law as anti-competitive.

Biggest winner are the developers.

Pretty much identical frameworks for both the PS4 and XBox One, not a developer but I am guessing the similar system specs and architecture will make it a lot easier to develop multi-platform games this generation.

definitely. having one console with leaps ahead hardware and specs is meaningless, as i doubt the developers are overly interested in doing console specific custom work just because they 'can' given the more powerful console.

It won't be backwards compatible, which is expected but disappointing.

And there’s one area in which Sony and Microsoft are in perfect harmony: Neither of their new machines are backward compatible with their current ones. That means your seven years’ worth of digital game purchases made over the Xbox Live Marketplace won’t function on the new machine. (Microsoft says your licenses for purchased movies, music and the like will transfer over.)

No more used games either?

Quote:
Wired asked Microsoft if installation would be mandatory. “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” the company responded in an emailed statement. Sounds mandatory to us.

What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.

Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.

But what if a second person simply wanted to put the disc in and play the game without installing – and without paying extra? In other words, what happens to our traditional concept of a “used game”? This is a question for which Microsoft did not yet have an answer, and is surely something that game buyers (as well as renters and lenders) will want to know.

You do not need to be always connected. Just confirmed on the Gametrailers stream.

Still haven't directly addressed the "always online". With all the features it looks like it is certainly leaning that way. Whether you need it for physical games (and movies?) to work is still up in the air.

Although the whole having to install the game thing makes that pretty irrelevant now.

The lack of games shown was disappointing. Especially the lack of exclusives. They didn't show enough to sway me from buying a Xbox over the Playstation although eventually down the road I'll probably end up with both anyways. I have a feeling the Xbox One is going to be pretty pricey with a Kinect bundled in.

I don't have an issue with having to install the game to play it.

Well that's a kick in the pants. Which one I go with will now entirely come down to the price. If its basically the same, I'll probably stick with XBox purely for continuity's sake.

Don't fully know what to think about this yet. I'll still probably get it once i can afford it. Although the name is dumb.

In the end, that was a fairly similar press conference to Sony's. Neither showed much in terms of games or exclusives.

No way. This is not an unfair practice, it's a differentiating point. That is in the very spirit of competition

Pretty disappointing reveal for me. Am I the only one that buys consoles mainly for gaming anymore?

Unfortunately, these press conferences aren't aimed at the gaming crowd. That's what E3 is for.

Why?

My guess for having to install the game is for performance reasons.

Outside of Netflix does anyone really use any of the multimedia stuff on their console. I highly doubt any early adopter is going to buy the Xbox one for watching TV. Early adopters are mainly gamers. That's where the focus should be. No ones going to line up in front of Future Shop to buy an Xbox One so they can flip between TV and movie in less than a second.

I like the look of it. Looks like a piece of stereo equipment. Will blend in nicely the peoples tv consoles. I hope Sony will go the same route as their PS hardware as always been weird.
