I'm at about a week now and have 40k. I don't see it taking months

Maybe I need to look at adding people because I find I run out of chips too often. How many "friends" do you got playing this? Is there a cut off for the number of people before it becomes useless to add people?
I tried to follow that guide and went away from the Blackjack and ever since I've been broke. Stupid slots why do people play them?

The only way (that I'm aware of) to collect LPs quickly is by focusing on fastest levelling in order to get 1000 LP every time you level.
I don't remember what I was at in terms of LPs at lower levels, but I do know that I played for 6 weeks only and I had close to 200,000 LP that I used on redemptions. 'Course, that was before the prices on a lot of things nearly doubled.
As you get to higher levels, LP gain can speed up. Once you've built all the hotels, it's not uncommon to get 300-500LP daily from collecting on the strip once or twice per day. Plus, you start to get LPs on your daily spin - you can easily get thousands of LP that way.
Right now, I'm at level 125ish and at 50k LP (after the 200k in redemptions). At this point in time, it takes me only about 15 minutes to level up and get 1000LP by playing blackjack at 10k per hand, but I've built up a chip stack that supports it.
So, it really depends on whether you want to go slow and steady to maximize your LP gain overall (which is what the guide walks you through) - or if you want to get LP fast, by focusing your energies on levelling.

Apparently I did something wrong. I'm at lvl 87ish and only have around 158k LP.

Well, my partner also played - same way as I did, fast levelling using blackjack - and is sitting at Level 87 with 167k LP (39k currently plus about 128k redeemed). So you're not that far off, 10k LP which can easily be accounted for because of the randomness of the daily wheel spins and hotel gathering.
Similarly, I'm level 126 with 50k LP plus 189k redeemed (I went and checked), which puts me 81k ahead of you. 39k of that is because I've levelled 39 times, and the remaining 42k can easily be accounted for by filling up the golden meter - in fact, by my estimations, you're likely 10-20k actually ahead of where I was at that level.

Still trying to figure out this gifting thing. When I'm in the game it let's me "gift" to each friend once per day. Yet, I seem to get multiple gifts per day from some friends. How are they doing this?

How the Gifting works:
1. it doesn't gift from your reserves. it just gives chips to your friends out of thin air.
2. You can do it once, then it goes on cooldown. This cooldown is not affected by when you clicked gift. It is like the Casinos so you may be able to gift again earlier than once a day.
3. The game is still buggy in alot of areas and it doesn't always start the cooldown.

Blackjack is a fast way to level, I agree!
I've been betting 3 x 2,000 and chips either come fast or leave even faster.
Went from 100k --> 40k --> 150k --> 220k --> 75k --> 160k and down again!

Just remember that you only earn LPs (via the LP meter) on the first hand, not all three.

I'm mainly playing BJ because I can lvl so much faster than slots.

There's gifts, but there's also the chips you get from "helping someone out" - ie clicking on their feed links. They both show up in the same window, so that may be what you're seeing?

You get points from hotels? Seems like I only get chips....maybe I'm missing something here?

I think only the high level hotels give LP. Once I built the Luxor I got LP of 500

The blackjack odds are slightly against you here. When you bust, the dealer doesn't have to get 17. You just lose.
So assumming a constant loss, what are you doing to gain enough chips a day to support the blackjack?

6 deck blackjack has (if I recall correctly) a 0.5% dealer edge, which I can basically cover through collecting from the strip and the daily spin. And if I feel my chip stack is a little light, I just collect for a few days in a row. At higher levels, with the daily spin alone giving at least 10k chips (often more) it doesn't take much.
Far better than the slots, anyway, which have been estimated at a 5% house edge.
