Not sure why you would want to send a 33 year old back up down taking games and practice time away from prospects?
Berra i see in the AHL.
If Kipper does come back Feaster has to tell him that he did him a "solid" this year by not trading him, but next year will be different. If for some reason Ramo looks good and Berra deserves the odd cup of coffee with the big club, then Kipper needs to know he can be traded at any time. I guess he could just retire, but not sure he would want to take the chance on ending his career mid season like that.
More than likely Kipper is done and the flames know it.

Berra will be the highest paid goalie in the AHL at $765K .... The $765 is just below the point where it will count against the NHL cap 525+375=900K..... but depending on his 616K bonus.(... signing, showing up at camp, ... 1 NHL game ??) he might count $500 K against the NHL cap no matter where he plays.

It's an ELC. For some reason I thought ELCs by default were two-way.
EDIT - Found it in the signing topic - ELCs are two-way by default.

Well when you compare it to the range of salaries for goalies ($700,000 to $6,875,000), it's pretty much minimum.

With any luck, Joey MacDonald will be the highest paid player in the AHL next season. The bar should be much higher than him.

Well for starters the season is going half a month longer than it usually does.
The timing is not particularly strange. Up until the deadline Feaster was concentrated on trades. After the deadline Feaster said he was going to focus on signing the kids. Wotherspoon and Granlund had to be signed by June 1st. Ramage by August.
People question the GM if he takes his time signing these guys. And apparently people question the GM if he signs them promptly. Like I said, seems silly to invent reasoning about PR/padding his resume when he's actually just doing his job in timely fashion. Guess Feaster can never win

People squawking about this trade are bonkers. He was our best goalie all year (sad as that may be) and he signed for 1 year, for peanuts.

Glad he was re-signed. He's a good backup and gives us options. Options are valuable.

IF only we had a backup like him immediately after the lockout. As awesome as it was to have Kipper be a workhorse for us, I think the team would have had more success with a nice backup like Mac. Good signing, and great term.

useful player, in a key position, who will accept any role, is a great team guy, and for under $1M.

Why? He's the best backup the team has had since since Turek and is adequate starting games. There are absolutely no downsides to this signing.

I believe Teemu Selanne did the same thing last season and the Finnish Flash still played another season and might be back next season. So, you shouldn't read too much on Kipper's salute to the fans by himself. He was just being appreciative on the fans' reactions. I for one thinks Kipper will be back next season.

He was pretty well done at that stage. Played that one good game in the playoffs but you couldn't ride him as a starter.

I would have liked to see Kipper back next season. Oh well, Joey Mac has been solid and the Flames shouldn't rely on Ramo/Berra next season.

70/30 chance Kipper retires after this season?
I did not think they would re-sign MacDonald but I do understand why the did. Not a bad signing either. Five goalies in camp this summer will create solid competition. I still believe it will be Ramo/Berra working the Flames crease in Tandem but if things don't go well it will be nice to have MacDonald there. Guy has done well since coming to the Flames.

If Kipper doesn't retire he will be traded. I see no way he will be on the roster next season. No room with Berra, Ramo and MacDonald. I'm hoping he doesn't retire so the Flames can get some value for him.

Log jam in net but the guy has played well for the Flames one deal is easy to swallow if he gets out played in camp.
who ever wins the starting job next season better have a thick skin.

I would suggest post apex is a player on the downside of their career. I would say with MacDonald last year and this year have been 2 of the best years of MacDonald's career. Also I believe Feaster also said he wasn't looking to acquire post apex players, this is retaining a players services not acquiring one. It's all in the language when it comes to lawyer speak.

Berra is on a 2way contract. He will have a maximum AHL salary for 65k or something like that due to being signed to an ELC
