He never wanted to be here for that contract and he certainly won't want to be here for less money and on a rebuilding team. He will have suitors out east that will be more to his liking.
In the end the Flames drove up the price and forced the Rangers to overpay so I'm going to look at the bright side in that the Flames screwed over the Rangers in driving up the price.

Sign him and Iggy to 1M per deals since they are both having bad seasons

Stuff like this makes me think that every move Feaster couldn't make or was close to making is another bullet dodged, I just don't know how many more he can dodge though. Seems like most of these long term high dollar deals made over the past 5 or 6 years are coming back to haunt teams. You want to lock up the great players but do they lose some motivation being locked up with less to prove.

Yes. While our core wasn't signed to terrible deals, how well did we do with that core after they were all signed long term?

After this summer no one will be able to do amnesty buyouts, correct? I assume this was primarily to appease the reduction in cap next year...
I'm fine with it in principal, but I feel it's letting some teams off the hook for making dumb decisions at the right time...I'd rather see each team have the opportunity to make 1 amnesty buyout every 5 years moving forward. I foresee us making a big splash a la Jason Garrison sometime soon that we will eventually regret...

He would have to agree to waive his NMC in 2017 so that if he wants to keep playing he could be traded to a cap floor team if needed. Unlikely that it would work out since I doubt Richards would be co-operative about it since he would almost certainly prefer the payout.

That would be an absolutely terrible move for New York. The compliance buyout would be by far a better option than trading him while retaining that much salary. Here's how the 2 scenarios would work:
Compliance buyout:
$24M in cash paid over the next 14 years
Cap hit disappears
Trade while retaining half his salary (assuming he retires at 38):
$17M in cash paid out over the next 5 years
$3.33M cap hit for the next 5 years
$4.61M cap penalty for 3 years after Richards retires

Outside of the NYI's I can't think of any contending teams out east that will have the cap space,Wong probably won't pay $5m for a second line center anyway, NJ is an option but I'm not sure what that team is going to look like next year.

Oh I'm sure if the Rangers buy him out that Feaster will be kicking tires as he doesn't seem a lot different than Darryl in that he doesn't stray too far from old acquaintances. You can bet he won't come to Calgary for a discounted price and I simply don't see the point in handing him big money unless he truly wants to be here and fits into the rebuilding plans.

Brad Richards continues to be one of the most overrated players in NHL history.

I thought Brad Richards' days as a #1 center was over before he put up two solid seasons with Dallas. I'm not going to count him out this time.
I personally think buying out Richards would be a difficult decision and a mistake to do it, especially this summer. The Rangers are not in a terrible cap situation next season and who are they going to replace Richards with? Brassard? A UFA replacement like Ribeiro will likely cost $5M +/- $500K, which is why we are still seeing teams re-sign their own free agents as if the salary cap isn't going down. You need players who can play and replacements aren't going to be cheaper and better. Richards is still a very good player who has been money in the playoffs for most of his career.

Is that how it's going to work? have they said what the terms of these one time buyouts are yet?

People just get caught up in free agency and the exciting big names, but in reality if you take a look at the big picture so many contracts are just colossal mistakes and huge catastrophes. Seriously I am constantly amazed at the money tossed around in the NHL, there is an ocean out there of undeserved contracts. I could list like 20 guys off the top of my head, and Richards is no exception.
I remember thinking this signing would have been a trainwreck, just like how I think the recent Perry signing is a trainwreck for the Ducks. Yeah, good this year, maybe next but... nobody on Long Island is happy that Alex Yashin is sitting in a Russian palace receiving hilarious Islander paycheques. Horcoff, 7mm? Lecavalier? Dipietro?
If you're a GM, pass. There's quite literally no reason to chew up valuable cap space for the present and sacrificing your future, in fact that's a stupid thing to do and poor asset management. You need to not only pay players on what they're worth today, but what they're going to be worth. It's not that hard to predict in most cases where guys are trending. And signing a player for anything over 5 years is extremely risky. Why assume all the risk as the organization? Fata that, these are kids playing a game making millions of dollars... let them take the risk. Small years, bigger dollars on short term only if necessary, and absolutely no trading restrictions. But not big dollars over long term, that's idiotic. It's time for GM's to start taking control of their teams.
And that is what terrifies me when Feaster says he opened up all this cap space by moving Iginla and Bouwmeester. He should be locked in a phoneless room on July 1 through 10. Leave it alone Jay, keep the space and make smart cap space decisions. NO sense in overpaying for anyone unless it's Sidney Crosby, and we don't have one of them.

805 points in 892 games doesn't scream huge overrated to me, nor does his near PPG in the playoffs either...did i mention his playoff MVP award?
I would personally rent a limo and pick him up at the airport for $5-6m a season.

See that right there is the problem. 800 bajillion points in 800 bajillion games.
How much more can you squeeze from the guy? Where is he headed realistically in production? Like people saying Iggy could command $5mm this summer per year. That would be a regrettable contract.
