"Kevin Maher ‏@KMaherNews12
DiPietro also admitted injuries, losing and fan hatred over the past 3 years made him think about killing himself at one point."

That really sucks if true. If its at that point, walk away from the game. He has made enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

I had a candid interview with @nyislanders G Rick DiPietro today. He was waived then demoted to AHL team in Bridgeport,CT last week.

Kevin Maher@KMaherNews12
DiPietro told me Isles waiving him felt like, "they ripped my heart out, stabbed it, set it on fire and flushed it down the toilet."

Kevin Maher@KMaherNews12
I asked DiPietro if he thinks he's still part of the Islanders future plans. He said, "I don't know." @news12li

Wow that's just sad. I feel bad for the guy. He signed a contract 100% of other people would have signed, gets injured, then gets booed when he makes his return. Now he has suicidal feelings over it all? Sad indeed.

I do not think you can restructure a contract in this CBA, or in the old CBA.

That's really sad to here him contemplate suicide. Such a frustrating and difficult experience it's been for him the past few years. Hope he can finally get past the injuries and make a comeback. But most importantly enjoy life more. If he can't get that through playing hockey, hopefully he can elsewhere.

He has been dealt the worst hand in his career. I wonder if he might be better off in his personal life to agree to a termination of that contract. He could sign for 1mil per year and be a teams backup, and he might pick up his play/stay healthy if he isn't trying to live up to that deal.

You really have to feel bad for DiPietro. His career has been ruined by unfortunate injuries. He's a confident and somewhat cocky guy in nature and it must have been hard for him to not be able to do what he used to do and with that contract hanging on him.

Some posters here are thinking there's a possibility that DiPietro can come back. I don't think he can. DiPietro's body is shot and always one bump from another serious injury. He simply isn't an NHL goaltender anymore and make no mistake, the Islanders have given DiPietro every chance to be productive.

He needs to go to the Kipprusoff school of stretching and flexibility training, which he probably has already tried. Sad to hear the news, he was a very good goalie when healthy.

Kipper probably told him to consider becoming a stand-up goalie with his hip and knee.

Hmmm, or not:

Brett Cyrgalis@BrettCyrgalis
Rick DiPietro on report that he has contemplated suicide: "100 percent" facetious in his interview with @KMaherNews12 #Context

Brett Cyrgalis@BrettCyrgalis
DP didn't make fun of suicide, instead told @KMaherNews12 how important his wife was to him, and w/o her, "I might have driven into a tree."

Joe Haggerty@HackswithHaggs
Not for nothing, but anyone that's ever spoken w/Rick DiPietro or people that know him realize he's way too in love w/himself to end it all

Katie Strang@KatieStrangESPN
#Isles Just spoke with Rick DiPietro, who assured me he was totally kidding. Although he knows that's not something to joke about anymore

Greg Wyshynski@wyshynski
Rick DiPietro should probably stop being facetious about suicide. Just a thought.

Bruce Arthur@bruce_arthur
Maybe Rick DiPietro should have spent some of his time on the IR reading up on guys like Rick Rypien.

Wow, the media took all of 5 seconds off before going right back to ripping on him again. Leave the guy alone, nothing he said was that bad

If that media guy tweeted that out of context, he's an idiot.
If Dipietro sarcastically used suicide as an example of how he felt, he's an idiot.

I'm thinking they are both idiots.

I think this is important to note. The Islanders organization gave him every shot in the book and more. I dont know how many times they had to nurse him back to health, but they did it.

Fact of the matter is that the guy just isnt reliable, time to fish or cut bait. The organization has to move on and with Evgeni Nabokov and Tim Thomas on their depth chart, DiPietro just doesnt rank anymore.

And if he was being flippant about committing suicide because of his contract then he should be dragged over the coals for that.

"I was going to kill myself because I make so much money that other people were unhappy with my performance because I havent spent more than a couple game outside of the treatment room."

Hes collecting insane cheques for what effectively amounts to spa treatments. Its a disservice to people with real problems to hear him moaning about this.

He never said "I considered suicide because things were so bad", he said "I might have driven into a tree". First off, I've said that before and never has it been used to suggest offing myself... it's because the experience of driving into a goddamn tree would have been more enjoyable than whatever I was doing at the time, like being forced to watch Dr. Phil.

Honestly those comments strike as someone who is depressed. Depression sort of skews your reality so you make inappropriate jokes like that, thinking they are just normal, funny things to say.

Icon35 Rick DiPietro pulled after 5 goals

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/stor...t-demotion-ahl

Quote:
A tough few weeks for Rick DiPietro didn't get any better Friday night.

The demoted New York Islanders goalie, making his first start for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, allowed five goals on just 12 shots before being pulled after the first period of an AHL game against the Connecticut Whale in Hartford, Conn.

DiPietro was beaten by Chris Kreider -- the young forward just sent back down to the AHL by the New York Rangers on Thursday -- just 2:59 into the game. He allowed another power-play goal just 56 seconds later, and the floodgates opened.

Connecticut scored three more goals in the frame, leading the Sound Tigers to turn to Kenny Reiter to start the second period of an eventual 7-3 loss.
