Yeah, I do sorta agree with both of you, I just didn't like the tone of mr.uppity over there. I just happen to think it isn't as big of a deal as some, but different strokes for different folks I guess. I really don't see the issue with just not answering your door.

I rarely do. We have a pretty specific sign at the door about door to door solicitation and if the door bell rings, I generally peek out the side window to see who is there before answering. My kid that lives on his own has a key, so he just lets himself in, and the neighbor kid from down the street knocks rather than ring the doorbell, so I always know it's him. So if the doorbell goes, it's usually indicative of the door to door sales types. If I look out the door and it's someone I don't know, with clipboards and the like in hand, I just walk away. If you've read the sign and still ring my doorbell, well....

But when they catch you in your driveway, it's a pain. But, I just say we're not interested.

The Calgary Herald can get really annoying out here, trying to sell. We had one really ignorant guy who pushed it with my husband. My husband is very easy going - very. He ended up yelling at the guy, while the kids and I stood there with eyes the size of saucers.

I take it you were referring to me as Mr. Uppity. I was legitimately feeling sorry for folks that have to go door-to-door as their job. Whenever I get door-to-door folks at my place, I try to be nice to them and politely say no. They're just doing their jobs afterall. But you're right. Maybe not everyone sees it like me and some people don't mind it.

So if my neighbour who doesn't know me well wants to discuss the street parking, what then? Or any other "welcome" reason for somebody to come to my door. Last winter some kid rang my bell to ask if I wanted my walkway shovelled.

I would put up a "No Soliciting" sign if I could find a way of saying "No Soliciting unless you are a kid selling something for fund raising or doing a Scout/ sports bottle drive"; without sounding creepy.

"No non-charitable solicitation welcome", or to avoid the double negative, "Charitable Solicitation Only".

Some of the "charitable" solicitors are pretty scummy too. I have had a few people come up to the door representing groups I've never heard of, and couldn't find anything about on the internet after the fact.

I think you missed my point. Mr Coffee asked what is wrong with simply not answering the door. Had I not answered my door the kid wouldn't have shovelled my walk and made $5. I used to do that type of stuff when I was a kid, so even though it was hardly worth the $5 for the 3 minutes of work the kid put in, I still paid him because I think it's great to see kids doing things like that.
