Sounds like a project for the Islanders, just like Grabner, Parenteau, Moulson ...

Anyone and a pick, except maybe Sven. O'Reilly is only 22 and has 3 NHL yrs under his belt, really a first line player already. To me that beats any "potential" a player may or may not have. And he is also just as young as any decent propect in the system already.
It seems like too many fans get caught in the media Hype surrounding prospects, I think that came form Sutter. So much hype about Backlund and to this point he has been a disappointment, offensively anyways. The Flames have not developed their own young players for some time now so why not go for someone from outside the organization? This team has not traded for a good young player for......

If Backlund + a 2nd doesn't do it for the Avs,
would you offer Backlund + our 1st for O'Reilly?
Loubo and Steinberg said yes, we absolutely should if that would get it done.
No one likes giving up a 1st, but to get a (almost) sure thing and young player at center who can solve some big issues for us now, rather than just a chance at doing so later, would be worth it.

A 2014 first maybe, not this years though. With the revamped draft lottery, a first rounder would be hard to trade, especially the way this year is looking, for the draft and for the Flames. There is a decent chance they could land one of the big 3.
And FWIW, take shot at Boychuck. A lot like Cammalleri but much faster

Two things.
I have serious misgivings about his playing in Russia/Current negotations.
Second, I would have to be getting a real slam dunk to want to move the first this year. Standings, right now:

Keep 1st round picks. This team can't gamble on moving a first at this time. A top 10 pick + Backlund is better thank RoR

To me a first rounder is more of a gamble then a 22yr old center man with over 200 games played. That first rounder like nearly every other FLames first rounder may never materialize....Expect for this draft year. AISE, maybe worth a 2014 1st but not a 2013 1st rounder. I know I'm contradicting myself but so be it.

First, yeah the whole standoff with him in Russia and the Avs is a little concerning. His demands are pretty high, and it appears he won't settle for less, showing perhaps he doesn't much put the needs of the team ahead of his own
Secondly though, the Flames have played less games than every other team in the league, I seriously do not expect this team to end up where it is now. At the very worst, they're a 12th place team, I would say.
Landing one of the top prospects of this year's draft would be an absolute treat though. To have one of Drouin or Mackinnon suiting up on a line with Baertschi would simply amazing, or a Jones on a line with Brodie.
However, I much prefer to watch a winning Flames team that doesn't follow in the footsteps of the losers north of us.

Didn'T O'Reilly already leave Russia? I read his KHL contract was mutually terminated.

This is the kind of thinking that has put us in our current predicament.
Part of me says claim Boychuk but the other part says we have a similar player in Horak. What message does that send to the players in Abby? Would have preferred we work out a deal with Carolina sending a contract back. However he would have to play and not sure where he would fit in the lineup if Baertschi is not out long term. Have to rely on the opinion of the pro scouts i suppose.

I think this is a no brainer... put a claim in for Boychuk. Young player that still has some upside. That is the type of player we should use one of our remaining contracts on.

2013 draft is getting huge hype. If the flames were a playoff lock and the team was going to make the playoffs with ease it is a different story. We are a Kipper injury away from choosing between Jones or MacKinnon. A top 5 pick is close to a sure thing this year and top 10 is looking really solid (guys like Shinkurak, Lazar ranked there). Plus Backlund is still improving and giving up those 2 assets to get a guy who seems like a Langkow type (not a bad thing) and then pay him $4-$5m per is not what this team needs

He was great with the Hurricanes and the best player on some very talented teams. I thought he would have success at NHL level because despite being smallish he seemed able to fight through the contact and find spots on the ice to be effective.
I would say as a junior he was similar to Cammalieri with a great one timer and shot in general and that he was better as a winger than Center. I would expect him to be a wing in the NHL not center despite what he is listed as but haven't watched him in the AHL or NHL to know what he is doing know.
As a homer Hurricanes (lethbridge) fan I would love to see him here but with the Flames having a ton of forwards already and him likely being a better fit on top 6-9 I don't see it happening.
I would love to see the team trade away some of the older wingers and fit him in but they still seem delusional enough to think this team is worth keeping together as is so unlikely they pick him up.

To me this seems like exactly the move Feaster makes. He adds a young player with upside for free to continue to try and get younger while staying competitive. He should also consider moving a winger for a pick here as well as a dman
If Sven goes on the IR this would work short term to give him time to make a deal

Also would the Flames have interest in Janssen? Does Feaster want a tough guy or is he too crappy?
