I assume all CP posters are affluent, no need to clarify that.

Your last sentence said that if your party had been in the US, it would have ended in tragedy. I won't stretch to assume you meant that every party in the USA involves every partygoer carrying firearms, but the idea that an instance of a knife being pulled at an American party automatically leading to tragedy is absurd.

My comment about bears was meant to illustrate that. I'm quite certain that unfortunate situations like yours happen in the USA all the time, and don't end in raging gun battles.

Just turned on CNN and they said an affiliate in New York said there are "many fatalities" from today's school shooting.

Still watching CNN and it is now confirmed one child is dead. Witness says the principal and school psychologist are dead also. I gotta go but this sounds really bad in the terms of number of people being killed.

Reports are saying multiple children are among the dead. I can't imagine the devastation for the families.

Several of my former co-workers live in that town and have elementary school aged children. I don't know for sure if they go to that school, but I hope they're all alright. So far, reports are that the shooter and 2 adults are dead, but it sounds like there are also child deaths.

^ Local news agencies are reporting that the shooter opened fire in a Kindergarten class. http://www.courant.com/news/breaking...,3969911.story

As a parent of a Kindergarten aged child, I hope to god they are wrong.

How the hell does someone have the nerve to blast up a school with innocent little kids?
