Chains of Love were great. Their singer can play the hell out of the tambourine. She was fantastic.
Victories was the other band I really enjoyed. Two piece female band, and one of the girls drummed, played keyboards and sang at the same time. It was great, really fun set.

Victories - like the White Stripes - one guitar, one drummer. One girl named Tory, one named Vic.
Chains of Love was amazing. Highlight of the night for me. Tons of energy, glad I got to see them.
Honourable mention goes to Gold. My two other friends who I was with said that was their favourite show. They don't have the stage presence of Chains of Love, but they are pretty talented musically.
Also saw Teledrome, Samantha Savage, The Gooeys, part of Victories show and Danny Vacon's third band Highkicks which made my head explode.
I missed Extra Happy Ghost!!! cause I think they were playing at the same time as Highkicks, and then Wild Rose Soul DJ's were taking a while to start and there was nobody left in the place, so we split.
“We always think of ourselves as punk rock, that’s the roots of it all,” says guitarist Jim Wilbur, on the phone from Durham, N.C. “Now when we are on tour, just about every town we go to we try to cover a punk-rock song from that town. Like an old hardcore song or something.”
But a search of “Calgary punk rock” revealed some options for Superchunk’s Thursday evening performance as part of Sled Island. The band has settled on Punk Rock Virgins by The Sturgeons, a recording that dates back to 1980.
Thursday’s show in Calgary will be without bassist Laura Ballance, who begged off touring due to continued hearing problems. Ballance, who co-founded the band and its label, Merge Records, with singer-guitarist Mac McCaughan in 1989, has not left the band. But Jason Narducy, who also plays with Merge labelmate Bob Mould, has stepped in for the show and a subsequent tour of the U.S. that will start after the August release of the band’s 10th album, I Hate Music.
You won't be disappointed. I saw OFF! here in Vancouver and they were amazing. As long as Keith doesn't have issues with his diabetes like he did recently, you're in for a treat.
The best part was because at the time, they didn't have a huge set list, instead of an encore, they just played their entire set twice.
I can't wait to see OFF! I got to see Flag! Play in Vegas last month and that was great, Keith Morris didn't seem to have any issues so I'm looking forward to it.
Get to check out the Night Marchers on Friday night as well, should be pretty good!
I'd love to see Old Man Markley and the invasives as well but won't be able to make their shows.
Those are the only bands I'm really interested in this year.
The moment you've all been waiting for has arrived! The 2013 edition of Sled Island Music and Arts Festival officially starts today! We've got you covered with plenty of excitement for tonight including an early mind-melting performance from Polaris-nominated Colin Stetson at Commonwealth and the Calgary debuts of Swans at Dickens and Iceage at the No. 1 Legion. If you're looking for a party atmosphere head to Republik for the always-fun Hollerado, Broken City for the psychedelic sounds of Unknown Mortal Orchestra or HiFi Club for an all-out dance party with The Gaslamp Killer. As always there's tons of great music to discover during the festival. Look out for performances by Calgary's latest supergroup Viet Cong at the No. 1 Legion, delta blues crooner Iceberg Ferg at Wine-ohs and Edmonton-based popsmith Calvin Love at Commonwealth for the late show.
There's lots more to check out besides just music, stock up on fresh produce at the Sled Island edition of the Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmer's Market, don't miss the art opening of Group of $even, the debut exhibition at Sled Island's first Contemporary Art Salon and pedal over to the Simmons Building for CSIF's Secret Cinema Bike-In w/ a yet-to-be announced French New Wave Classic screening tonight.
I'm thinking about going to see Swans too. I love blistering, harrowing experiences. But the weather's gonna be so crappy I might just park my butt at the Legion.
Commonwealth was at capacity at 8:00 pm, but I could get in with wristband. Colin Stetson was amazing. Got his CD for $8. Here he is on CBC Q:
Dickens had a huge line at 9:00 so I didn't bother trying. John Spencer was turned away (but got in later and met a friend of mine). I saw tweets around midnight that Dickens had space and the Swans were playing for another hour?
There was no problem getting in Palomino, so I saw 7 bands there. The best were Young Benjamins and The Chantrelles:
What time will I have to be at Republik to see Superchunk?
Mac DeMarco has cancelled all shows for a family emergency.

Gonna be checking out the East Village umbrella party tonight
I got to Commonwealth right about when Colin Stetson was about to go on and couldn't get in with my wristband.
Went and watched a bit of hockey, then tried to get into Dickens a little after 9...no dice.
Went to Wine-Ohs to dry off and saw Iceberg Ferg, then saw Miesha and the Spanks were doing a surprise show at Plamino, so I went and saw that. Walked back and forth between the Leigon and the Palamino for a bit, then I overheard some people mention there was room at Dickens, so I busted my ass over there and caught the end of Swans. Pretty intense. Headed to Broken City to see UMO, but once again, totally at capacity.
Still had a great night, despite all the running around and then beginning of the night was really frustrating.
No shows for me tonight. I'll be rested up and ready to take on the weekend!
