Is this serious? Dude, chances that you get sick from a hand shake are pretty slim. Even if you do catch the flu or a cold, who gives a crap. You're not going to die from it.

This is more of a gear grinder. I hate it when you extend your hand and the other guy starts squeezing before the thumbs meet, and they end up crushing your fingers. I immediately start thinking less of people who do that. A proper handshake should be a no brainer, but a lot of people simply have no clue.

Well I hate when you go to shake a women's hand and they put their hand to their chest because they don't shake men's hands. Bitches!

Good grief, this stuff is getting silly. How long before we live in some type of bubble?

Wouldn't this just be applying what we have learned about how germs spread to our everyday lives in an effort to improve things? Do you have any examples of where things have gotten silly?

Just because it can't be rated as another one star thread doesn't mean it isn't another one star thread.

Wipe that slippery fish off on your slacks when they aren't looking. That's what the washing machine is for.

No need to change anything. Wash your hands regularily and keep them away from your face. It's not rocket surgery.

I'm firmly in the handshake camp, but that doesn't meen it's a terrible thread. Just because you don't agree with the premise doesn't mean it can't be discussed. It's a current and relevant subject. The number of posts discussing instances where handshakes have been banned highlight that relevance.

Ya that's a huge reason I think handshakes should stay. The offering up of the (empty) weapon hand in a sign of greeting is arguably the most recognized, cross-cultural hand gesture on the planet. I remember watching footage of a 1970's first contact encounter involving a European anthropologist and an Amazonian tribe, and even the uncontacted tribesmen knew to stick out their hand as a greeting, which surprised me.
And if they really bother people that much, then just be happy this isn't 100-150 years ago, where spitting into your hand before a shake was pretty much standard business procedure after coming to an agreement.

Well, it looks like I was a couple years ahead of the curve on this one, but there is now some research to support what intuitively makes good sense: handshakes are unsanitary.
This is a release from the American Journal of Infection Control.
Quote:
“Fist bumping” transmits significantly fewer bacteria than either handshaking or high‐fiving, while still addressing the cultural expectation of hand‐to‐hand contact...
