I agree with you. I just wish that we were viewed in a more positive light. It would be nice to have other provinces say "Alberta is a great partner for the rest of the country and always the first to lend a hand. Oh, and they also generate a lot for the economy."

And if more Albertans took that phrase, instead of CC's dick waving approach, maybe they would.

Look at the wording and the tone of the post I was responding too.

Does this make them distinct? Yes, does it make them special? Perhaps. Does it entitle them to more rights and priviledges than the other provinces... not in my opinion.

But as soon as you label them "distinct" they become percieved to be special. I would suggest there are many regions of the country that could tick off the boxes you mentioned. Language, Acadians got it, as do Capers and Newfoundlanders. Culture is all over the map in Canada.

We do not need to be giving special titles to places/people.

Oh yes, there are many distinct "cultures" in Canada, but surprising as it may seem to some people (especially those of us who have visited or lived there), Acadians/Cape Bretoners/Newfies do speak English and it is their primary language.

They also are governed by the same legal system as the rest of us (excepting Quebec), and they basically have the same type of school/educational system, and basically overall there isn't much difference between living in Alberta or living in Nova Scotia or Nfld.

I have live in NB, NS, Ont, Manitoba, BC and AB. There are significant differences. FYI, Acadians don't speak english, they speak Acadian, not french.

I still believe you can't be labeling provinces as distinct.

I too have lived in a number of places... Sydney NS, Dartmouth NS, Yellowknife NWT, Belleville ON, and of course Calgary AB. I have also visited every province and territory in Canada except for the Yukon.... so I definitely know what language people in Canada speak. Also my wife's father is an Acadian from NB... they speak French... it may be a #######ized French... but it is French. Most Acadians live in NB and NS and I may be wrong here but they do not comprise the majority of the population in those provinces... there by making those provinces "distinct".

wtf... you can't type b-a-stardized on here without the word censor #### it out?

More accurately, they speak the Acadian (and/or Chiac) dialect of the French language.

Acadian French is simply a dialect of French, so it is fair to say that they speak French. Most Acadian folks I've run into can speak English as well.

Acadian is a loooong way from french. I had to explain that to my mother when she was helping with my homework.

If you mentioned this earlier, and I missed it, do you support Quebec be called "distinct", but not being a "Nation".

It's a regional dialect, but it's still part of the French language.

Agreed, but Rerun's point that English is their primary language is wrong. It's Frenchish...

Primarily yes. The word nation, to most people, has too many other connotations which can be interpretted in so many different ways. A "nation" has many rights that a "distinct society" does not.

As for the primary language of Acadians being French, Acadian, or Chiac, I disagree. I would say that English is their primary language and Acadian or Chiac is their mother tongue.

Yes, I also pointed out Rerun's error above.

Acadians speak French as their primary language. It's a distinct regional dialect of French that might have many words and phrases that would be unrecognizable to a French-speaker from France (or even Quebec), but it's French nonetheless.

Most Acadians (especially those from Gen X and Gen Y who were educated after New Brunswick adopted a policy of official bilingualism) also speak English fluently as a second language. In places like Moncton, it's not at all uncommon to hear people switching back and forth between English and French during the same conversation.

When I went to school in Riverview, we had kids that did not speak a word of english. course that was in the early 80's. We learnt "Le Hotdog" Le French Fry", etc......

We should get back on point, if there is one.

I agree... however my definition of a primary language is a language that you use 51% of the time. The language you use the other 49% of the time is a secondary language... and don't confuse this with a person's mother tongue.

And overall, in the provinces of NB and NS, English definitely is the primary language. You cannot say that about Quebec.

What are you basing that on? Many Acadians speak English in the workplace (or have a call center job where they're expected to communicate to callers in either language), but their primary language (i.e. the language they speak at home with friends/family) is French.
