Interesting. While that may be true (NHL not being impressed), the NHL has also fairly consistently refused to even consider discussing anywhere that doesn't already have a building ready to go. Chicken/Egg...

Yeah, his reasoning was that Markham would have a couple of years to build after the expansion franchise was granted.

AltaGuy has a magnetic personality and exudes positive energy, which is infectious to those around him. He has an unparalleled ability to communicate with people, whether he is speaking to a room of three or an arena of 30,000.

I think the way a team gets into the GTA without paying some exorbitant fee to MLSE is to basically give them everything they can associated with the team, without actually having MLSE own the team outright.
MLSE can run the arena (even own it), collect parking fees, concessions - everything aside from owning the actual hockey team.
Without a lot of carrots, it's going to be hard to get MLSE to give up their very lucrative monopoly.

Looks exactly like NW Calgary, just put a little elevation change in there.

When Markham gets a team I bet they win the cup before the Leafs do.

Well, today is decision day, with the vote going tonight. The debate is going on at the moment. As a Markham resident, I'm all for having an NHL team, but the current plan really reeks of a scam, and putting the screws to the taxpayers for supporting a private ownership group. There's a whole lot of questions this group hasn't answered, and I hope a bunch of residents really grill ownership and the Mayor regarding this, because as it stands right now, there are a whole lot of hands in the pot, but nobody is helping the residents in this proposal, and all the white collars are just looking at their stake in this. As well, the ACC was estimated to be built for about $350M when all was said and done - 14 years back. More recently they spent about half a billion on a couple condo's, renovations and restaurants attached to the arena. What kind of second rate facility are they expecting to spend on this arena if they're only spending about $325M in modern day? Or are they understating the costs which will later be passed on to the taxpayer once they balloon? If nobody can read into this, I'm out for now until you get more honesty, and a better plan in place. Having said this, I'd be surprised if it isn't given the green light because of the higher ups benefitting by putting this on their resume. Basterds.

Anaheim missed their chance at a great name. Anaheim Earthquakes, the arena called the Epicenter. First big FA signing - Mike Richter.
How about the York New Rangers.

Great, just what the hard working, taxpaying people of Alberta and BC need-another arena in eastern Canada to pay for. We'll sleep a whole lot better knowing our $2k per man, woman and child in equalization payments paid to Ontario and Quebec is now going to build NHL rinks in Markham and Quebec City instead of hip replacements for grandpa and french lessons for Asian immigrants...

Incredibly, the council meeting is still going on right now. They haven't voted yet and it's 2:18 a.m. in Markham.

Ottawa and Florida were building their arenas when they entered the league, same with Calgary.
