Yes. The save statistic alone is pretty useless.
But overall W-L records when leading after 6,7 or 8 innings are pretty important.

If the Jays lose today we could have a unique situation where both teams are 0-1 when leading after 8 innings.

No, they really are not important. Santos and Oliver pitch the same way whether or not this game was tied, the Jays were down a run or up a run. The bullpen has been nothing short of amazing for the Jays this season. The 9th inning is no different then the other 12 they pitched scoreless this season.

Indians only have 2 hits today and both have left the park.

I think pitching while holding leads is more important and more pressure than when behind or when the game is tied. When teams are behind, they push more. On Thursday the bullpen could have pitched great for 11 innings but if they had not finished the game in the bottom of the 16th, none of that would have mattered would it?

That's why they says "It's important when your team puts up a crooked number, for your pitcher to not allow the other team the same crooked number".

No, those are just cliches people that announce baseball games like to use.

Casey Jannsen is going to pitch the exact same pitches to the batters he faces, no matter if the Jays are up by 1 or down by 1, no matter what the score. Luckily in this great world of FanGraphs and statistics, most of these analogies have been proven wrong.

Team's don't push more when they're behind. It's important not to give up runs when your pitching, plain and simple. Santos doesn't change his approach or do anything different on the mound if he's pitching in the 9th if Johnson has hit his Homerun or not.

You make the game sound robotic.. like pitchers have no feelings or nerves or momentum. Or at home or away. The closer at home gets a boost from the crowd. The closer on the road get nervous from the crowd. They are human. If this wasn't the case, why is there a crowd at all?

Just for fun you and I will have an experiment throughout the season.

Jays bullpen when the Jays are behind or when the game is tied.
At the end of the 11th right now.
13 IP - 0 runs

Jays bullpen when the Jays have the lead.
2 IP - 1 run

Oh wow...Sportsnet West...wow! I guess people would rather watch a meaningless hockey matinee hockey game over an exciting, extra inning, of Blue Jays baseball. FAIL.

It's not even like they're not playing it, it's on Sportsnet Calgary, just tell people where it is until the Jays game is over.

I do have access to all 3 sportsnet channels at my place, it just sucks for viewers/Jays fans who are stuck with Sportsnet West/Calgary.

This might be a first, people complaining about switching over to the beginning of a Flames game

That is the cardinal sin though, a network cannot leave a live event.
