Bit of an update. His surgery was done yesterday and the vet released him to our friend today. They asked that he stay with my friend at least for 1 week so they can do follow up with him. They also have to change his cast in a few days becase the current one is just temporary. Here's a picture of our boy. Kind of blurry but it's the best I have right now.
He seems in pretty good spirits. He was really happy to see my friend when he picked him up from the vet. He will be on some pain medication for a while as well as some anti-biotics, but the vet said everything went great and she expects a full recovery.

For a sad thread title, it's turning out to be a pretty happy ending. CP is a fantastic community.

This one hit home for me.
Just 4 weeks ago my dog was running and playing in the snow and tore his ACL, and after taking him to the vet I learned the cost was going to be over $4k. Fortunately my friends and family all pitched in and we were able to save him with the help of others.
Today Sam is recovering because of the help of others.
Sam Wishes you guys all the best, and for a speedy recovery!

Not to put a bummer on the thread, but stories like these are why you should carry vet insurance, if you aren't in a position to just pay a BIG bill, in one shot. My wiener dog Molly had a problem with her back last year, that would have cost me $ 1800 if she was uninsured. With the vet insurance, I was only out $400. I know a lot of people think it is a scam, but for a situation like Mayers, most plans would have covered 100% of a car accident.

I learned this the hard way.
After doing some research I found Trupanion was pretty much the best route. I wasn't as impressed with Petsecure. But do your research and pick the best one for your pet.

Good point. How much do you pay a month for insurance? I assume it depends partly on breed and size of dog.

Just an idea for some of us, I don't know why I just thought of it, but I did.
Not all of us are gamblers, but maybe those that are interested could put five dollars down on a sports select ticket on Saturday, and whoever wins could donate their winnings.
Dumb idea, but it's fun, and gives me an excuse to play sports select.
Anyways, sarge on

I am with Pet Secure, and I pay $42/mth for a mid range plan that will cover up to $4000/yr with a $300 deductible. The costs of regular visits and checkups count towards the yearly desuctible however, and you'll likely spend that anyway. Bear in mind daschunds are a higher risk breed with their back issues, and she is a little more pricey to insure.
Also buy the plan when the dog is younger, amd it is a lot cheaper, as they lock the rate for life.
