I think it was a way different mission, you weren't really facing a national army at that compound that was all that alert or well trained. It was a costly mission as well in terms of material costs.
You were also fighting a complacent enemy without anti air defenses.
In this case I can't see how easy it would be to fly a helicopter through to the center of Demascus and crash it into a compound of alert decently trained special forces troops of Syria's own, then fighting your way into the Palace or into a bunker.
I also doubt that el presidentie is going to stick his head up for a sniper shot, and it would be very tough to get a sniper into range since they probably have ringed defenses stretching out over blocks.
And the above is correct, Syria has one of the best air defenses in the middle east, they've spent lavishly on it with both the Russian's and Iranians, so getting in through air is a real risk. Walking in through Turkey is the most effective way.
And I have no doubt that there are special forces troops from various nations in Syria training the insurgents or at the very least gathering intelligence and getting it back to the rebel groups.
But I would think that those Special Forces groups are fairly specialized around training insurgents (Green Beret) or even targeting infrastructure (Seal, Marine Force Recon?)
Plus Iran is Syria's best Ally, how would they react if that f%%Ker got zapped by a Western Bullet. You want to see paranoia through the roof, that would cause it.
