Haha, since when is photo radar about safety? It's a revenue generating machine, through and through. I just wonder if all of that revenue helps out St. Albert, since it's the RCMP collecting it.

I think this thread is now completely derailed. Nobody wanted to talk about Edmonton anyways.

It's unreal. You can see 4 signalized intersections from pretty much any point of the City. I have no idea who their traffic planner is, but he's terrible at his job.

Cities get income from RCMP-issued tickets on infractions that occur within city limits.

Well I've been up here for a couple weeks now, so I figured I'd bump the thread. It's not too bad so far. I live just off Whyte, down 107th. Super easy to get to the University via bike, although I imagine I'll have to figure out transit when the weather gets to -73.

A few thoughts:

1) The homeless people are the most polite I've ever met. Every encounter end with a "have a nice day" or "god bless you". I'm much more inclined to give Edmonton poor change than any city I've ever been to. Plus, random drunks prowling Whyte have given me free beer 3 times already. Killer.

2) I never need to leave the area really. The Strathcona/Garneau area really contains everything I'd need (except Rexall and Commonwealth), so I get to avoid the apparently quite sketchy north.

3) Haven't been stabbed yet, although there's a magpie that lives in my tree that is most likely up to something. He gives me ill-favoured looks.

4) UofA's beer gardens were terrible. Overpriced, ended too early, and had 0 atmosphere. Too many engineers is my guess .

Anyways, to those who gave me advice earlier in the thread about living in this area, thanks a ton! Overall, I quite like it.

Congrats, you've moved to a fine city. It's a spectactular city in the summer, lousy with the weather in the winter but this is Alberta where we have to put up with snow and cold. Get into the river valley before it's snowed in. YOu still can in winter, but it's absolutely terrific in summer/fall.

I realize I'm responding to a post written over a year ago, but just noticed this. There's a jeep that hides behind the Bellerose High School sign quite frequently. He'll getcha..

Here is my two cents without reading anymore then the first line of your op:

-Born and raised in Calgary, never thought I would "like" Edmonton. went to school and worked there for 5 years

-I was wrong, very diverse city (might not mean much to you but it did to me as I got older)

-Whyte Av area "vibe" is great, Calgary bars can be very pretentious, where Edmonton is a lot more layed back.

-Definitely has the dirty feel to the city

-Way better traffic then Calgary, but the train goes no where (for university and students its great however).

-Looking back, going for jog's over the high level bridge, laughing at the pollution so visible to the east is actually a fond memory of mine, and I came to love that very specific area of Edmonton.

-Would love to live near the river valley central area, other then that, wouldn't want to live in that city.

-West Ed blows on a week day, sucks more on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, and is hell on earth on a long weekend.

-Don't be caught on whyte past 2am after the bars and people clear away.....

Edit just clued into how old this op was but meh
