I have trouble seeing Edmonton as the real deal, they're getting most of their production from one line, and otherworldly over his head goaltending by Khabby.

They are so similar to the Flames under Greg Gilbert that exploded out of the gate, and then fell apart that its uncanny.

Edmonton is playing on the enthusiasm of their young players, and thats great, but thats not going to last, the Oilers aren't deep enough to be able to counter then inevitable low areas.

Its just the same on the other side where the Canucks won't struggle for ever and they're too deep and experienced to be that bad.

That's true.

I wish I knew how each team fared after exactly 10 games, but I will have to pass on that. Calgary looks to be gaining steam after a slow start. Hopefully I am wrong, and they make a serious run for the division title.

The Gerber line is accounting for 60% of the Edmonton points. Lets see what happens when 1 or 2 go down with injuries.

There is a long history of teams with strong starts who fade off into the distance. TO did it last year, St Louis started 9-1-1. There are always examples of teams that had a good first month or even two and then just couldn't keep up that pace for any extended period of time. I don't expect Edmonton to finish near the top of the conference.

At the end of the year I'd expect the point breakdown to looks something like:

1. Vancouver 105pts - Playoffs
2. Toronto 96-98pts - Playoffs
3. Calgary 90-94pts - 9th-11th
4. Montreal 90-94pts - 8th-10th
5. Edmonton 86-90pts - 10-12th
6. Winnipeg 80-85pts - 11-13th
7. Ottawa 75-80pts - 13th-15th

Obviously my point predictions don't totally jive with what point totals it took to finish in those places last year but I was trying to estimate where they might finish but also how many points they might get.

Fully expect the shine to come off the Oilers as they head out on the road for 10 of their next 12. October has been fun, and quite possibly provides a glimpse into the future, but this pace isn't sustainable. I have zero expectations for them to be in the top eight by the end of the season. Just enjoying the wins while they come.

Agree with that, might have Toronto in the same range as Calgary and Edmonton a little lower but for the most part I think it's spot on

people who think Edmonton is the 'real deal' this year need to wait about 20 more games I think

look at last year, I am sure the Canucks/Sharks/Wings/Caps etc. had 10 game streaks where they went 3-4-2 or 4-5-1 etc.

While teams like the Oilers/Senators had 10 game runs where they went 7-2-1 or 8-1-1 etc.

it's too small a sample size to have any definitive information about whether a team has made the leap or whether one has fallen back

I'd like to see Edmonton succeed, it will drive the Flames. There are two teams the Flames hate, and when the Oilers do well it will light a spark under our guys asses. I dislike the Oilers just like everyone else, but my hate of the Canucks is so much stronger that if Edmonton were to make it into the playoffs it wouldn't be so bad. At worst it makes our guys feel like they are underperforming. They are going on young talent right now, and are nowhere nearly as cocky as Vancouver. It's time for the Alberta rivalry to actually mean something in the league.

If we need edmonton to succeed in order to light a fire under our team we should forfeit the rest of the season.

Really? I know everyone is saying it but low scoring and low goals against...to me their games haven't been the greatest. RNH is doing good but his goals have been far from highlight reel caliber.

Watching talented young players learn the professional game and what it takes to succeed is one of the more enjoyable aspects of hockey for myself.

I think it's not just about the ones that go in; there are probably on average @ 5-9 deadly impressive scoring plays that come within an inch of going in but don't quite make it in. That game against St. Louis on the 30th was 4-2 but could have easily been 7-2, pretty exciting hockey in my books! Those plays are usually highlight reel worthy even though they don't count but it's just as entertaining to watch.

RNH may not be taking up highlight reel space on every goal he scores but they don't ask how, just how many! Pretty sure not every one of Lecavalier's or Iginla's goals end up on the reel every time they score

I'd have to agree. I wish the Flames had more players that fell under this category. I was really looking forward to seeing Backlund's development this year if he got a legitimate shot in the top 6 but I guess that will have to wait.

I bet you just couldn't wait to post this as soon as Calgary was officially below Winnipeg, eh? I'm sure you just happened to wait til this exact night to update the thread.
