When did I do that? I was merely stating that areas like the DTES don't exist in every city with a million people or more.

That's great, and areas like Bed Stuy don't exist in every city with a million people or more.
The point, which you seem to have missed, is that taking one small section of any city and using it to disqualify the rest of the city from consideration is asinine.

Did anyone make that claim?

If that was your point why didn't you just say that instead of claiming that every city with a million or more has an area like the DTES?

I do like how you changed and you're now calling it Downtown East Side as opposed to East Hastings. Thank you.

Why would I care? The list doesn't affect my life in any way.

Sorry still think these surveys are garbage. The fact the Vancouver got knocked for the malahat highway being closed, really is IMO stupid.
You will never gauge the livability of a city unless you truly live there. Although i guess this is a good guideline as most of the cities are pretty desirable IF YOU HAVE MONEY

If you're to dense to make that simple connection I'll cease beating my head against the wall.

Haha they lost top spot because of some drunken idiot on the malahat? That's funny, and pretty embarrassing for the legitimacy of the survey.
Would have been way better if they lost it because of the riots.

If you read the part of the article that talks about it it says further unrest with factor in next years ranking so if we make it back again loose again or win and then destroy apart of the city again well drop in ranking.

Has anyone in this thread actually spent any time in the DTES? Like I mean really spend time there? Lived there? Worked there? Walked through it regularly?

I used to live off Commercial just a little up the hill from East Hastings. I walked down the street many times. I used to drink at the Ivanhoe too (cheap draught), although not on Hastings, it was still what most people considered a "bad area".
I can't say I was ever threatened or was scared for my safety.

Vancouver is a sess pool of jerks, homeless and the self-absorbed that happens to be situated in a gorgeous area. The city itself could be nuked and I'd be happier, as a Canadian. That area has been raped of it's natural beauty in the inlets and bays.

Nvm. Late to the party.
Though I will say, it was beyond predictable that VANFLAMESFAN would be in this thread blindly defending Vancouver as a city.
No one's saying it isn't an awesome place to live, it just has serious problems.

Predictable? Sure, I knew I would get into something in this thread.
Blindly defending? Come on. I'm not defending the downtown east side. It's embarassing that I live 20 minutes from an area like that. At the same time, media makes it seem a lot worse than it is. No, I haven't lived or worked in that area, but whenever I am down there, it's not like I am being bombarded with drug addicts, I'm not stepping in needles. I'm not walking by people who are shooting up. It's a bad area, sure, but it's not dangerous to point where I will stay away at all costs. It's just.....gross.
I am not defending it for the hell of it. There's plenty of criticism of it that's totally warranted, but some of the statements were unfair in my mind and I jumped in. Once again, predictable, sure, but I wasn't making unreasonable claims, was I?
if I started making unfair shots at Calgary, I would see plenty of responses from the CP faithful.

My face is a bum!

I've walked through there, and yeah, it has nothing on US cities.
But 40% HIV infection rate!?! That is staggering, and just straight up 3rd world.

I don't see where the blind defense was, he never said it wasn't a pretty horrible area, just that there are plenty of places in plenty of cities that are just as bad, if not worse, in plenty of other cities.
