Now, as a lady I don't shave my face. However, I've been told two things to help with razor burn:
Use conditioner instead of shaving cream.
Never shave within two hours of waking or going to bed.
The second rule is because your skin expands. Using hot water is great in theory as it opens your pores, however it also can make your skin puffy so you don't get as far down the follicle and when your skin shrinks back down, that's when you get the razor burn.

Can't recommend them enough.
I got my first straight razor from them a few months ago and haven't looked back to the expensive cartridge crap since.
They also have awesome hand made Japanese chef knives that are surprisingly inexpensive for the quality you get.
Basically, for anything sharp, go to knifewear.

I still haven't found a shaving cream that works as well as Herbal Essences conditioner.

I found a lot of the shaving creams with "Aloe" or smelly stuff and additives irritated my face. I use the Gillete red/orange - original cans now. its the old school basic shaving foam formula and it has helped a lot. Sometimes all the chemical additives are just bad for our faces.
I'm curious to try the safety Razor after reading this though.

I tried all kinds of different blades, lotions, creams and hot or cold water but eventually gave up on shaving with a blade completely because of the razor rash.
I use a Braun microfoil, works not too bad but it does miss some, especially on my neck where some of the whiskers grow close to my skin. I use a beard trimmer to clean up what that the Braun misses.

I have had a lot of luck with "art of shaving" products. I use the oil, shaving cream, and after shave. I have a brush too, but usually I'm too lazy to do it and just use warm water and lather it in my hands (that's what she said). For a long time the products were only available in the US, but now they are available at Sephora in Canada. That is the only negative, I'm not a huge fan of buying anything at Sephora, but that's the way it goes I guess. If you travel a lot to the US you can find a lot of "art of shaving" stores too and it seems to be a bit cheaper (as is everything I guess).

I thought The Bay carried Art of Shaving products, but I would have to double check.
I am having a problem where shaving on consecutive days is bad news with the safety razor. Right out of a hot shower, I am just not able to shave on the second day (with a fresh blade) without causing lots of cuts and razor burn. I don't know if shaving with more facial hair makes the shaving process more forgiving or what. I had similar issues with an older Gilette Fusion/MACH whatever - after letting the hair grow out, shaving was a breeze, try again the next day and it is a blood bath.

I have the exact same problem. My solution was to grow a beard haha. But I still only trim the neckline once or twice a week cause I need a couple days growth or else it's a bloody mess.

I wish I could grow a nice, soft beard but unfortunately my facial hair is like wiry metal strands and even more uncomfortable than rubbing a styptic pencil all over my face.

All I can get
|
Merkur Safety Razor.
I alternate blades. Feathers are super-sharp, Astras are on the cheaper end, but do the job. I currently like Derby blades.
I use plain ol' baby oil as a pre-shave. Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap is awesome. Proraso on the budget side.
Rinse your face well and use an Alum Block to close pores. Finish off with a aftershave balm.

Once your facial hair is longer that the curl it'll get better. I find that new beard is so itchy. After it grows in it will get more comfortable. That said I usually shave once it gets itchy. Last winter, I got past the itchy stage. It was great but ended up shaving it.
I second the cold water shave. First time is a shock but after that you get use ld to it.
Not sure if it was mentioned but if you use shaving cream and disposible, let the shaving cream soak in for a few moments before you start.

I have tried pretty much every single combination of foams, gels, oils, razors and aftershaves. I have shaved in the shower, out of the shower with hot, cold, medium water and i ALWAYS get bad razor burn. Evertime i shave though it feel like it is going really smooth but never get the results i am looking for. So, i bought a really cheap beard trimmer from walmart(i think its $12.99) and use rechargeable batteries and i dont get any razor burn whats so ever. It isnt as close as a razor shave but it is pretty darn close. Ill never shave with a razor again! Would like to try a straight blade once though.

I use Nivea for Men shave gel and a Shick Quattro with the vibrating handle. I shave every two days and never use aftershave. The vibration reduces friction and helps a lot, as I get inferior results with that razor when I don't turn it on. I shave upwards on the neck against the grain, and go over certain areas twice in different directions. It works, finally found the right combo.

I get my supplies from Fendrihan, great site to order for Canadians, has a good selection. Make sure to get a sample pack of razors so you can try a bunch of different brands to find what works best for you.
