I agree with the others about the down payment and having to get use to not having readily savings or disposable income...at least for now
On a side note, I paid the wrong credit card -my HBC card last month but didn't realize it until the card that I always use was declined. HBC said they can't to do a transfer balance because their card is not a regular credit card. They are sending me a cheque but in the meantime, I'm a month behind my normal card and the interest on top of it. On the other hand, I can go ape at Zellers.

I went through two years of huge medical costs for my knee problems.
Paying for a private MRI to confirm my knee was shot was a brutal expense. Over the 2 years following I racked up huge costs to try and rehab my knee back to the point I could play sports again. I estimate that I spent over $15K overall on physio, active release therapy and other things.
That sucked hard.

Not a ton of money but...
I was given a $200 speeding ticket while driving to the bank to cash a $200 birthday cheque from my grandma.

But it was because she sold another house she owned, which she was renting out. Apparently you pay big tax on those when you sell them.

You pay taxes on 50% of capital gains. Assuming no other income, she would have had to have profited about $380,000.00 on the house...actually probably slightly less since you mentinoed she was renting at least one unit. The rental income minus expenses would factor in there too.

That's not necessarily true. If the owner of a rental property has been claiming depreciation while they own the property, and they sell it for more than they paid, they have to pay tax on the depreciation they took before. Basically, you get to reduce your rental income by X dollars every year you own it, but you have to pay it all back when you sell. And that money is taxed as income not capital gains. So you could theoretically have no gain on sale, but have a huge tax bill if you've been claiming depreciation for a long time.

I had the same thing on my birthday except it was $40 for ten over. I was doing the ten over too, that isnt a reduction. Everybody else was doing 60 in that 50 zone too but I got nailed. Told the cop it was my birthday and he said "sucks to be you"

Buying a new car. I have a perfectly adequate car now. Now I need a new car because of Impaler Jr. So, I will still have a perfectly adequate car, but will be tens of thousands poorer, since the car is not an asset. It's just a car. I have just a car now. This grinds my gears.

Hopefully he kept you out of jail, which means the $7,000.00 is probably a lot better than the price you would've paid to your new cellmate.

I'm self employed and don't pay cpp or ei. There are ways around it but obviously I won't collect a pension when I'm old, either.

Self-employed never pay EI.
It's usually worth it to file a T4, even with the CPP.
