But I didn't say he sucks, I just said that so far he is still pretty much a one hit wonder, and it's been eight years since that happened. Note that after Buffy ended, Angel didn't last either, and the only thing he came up with since (in the moving pictures media) are a couple of flop serieses and a somewhat popular short internet humour-piece.
(Dr Horribles sing-a-long was okay, but I couldn't bother myself to keep up with it all the way. I've also read one album of the comic Fray (I think the first one), and while it was an okay read, it had nothing in it that made me want to read more.)
Also of important note: Whedon's three films so far (either as a writer or a writer/director) are Buffy the Movie, Alien Resurrection and Serenity. First almost killed a franchise before it was born, the second put a long stop to one of the more succesful scifi/horror franchises and the third one came after the franchise was basicly dead already.

Angel didn't end because it wasn't popular, as it was very popular. It ended because of cost production. The final season they put them into the building so they didn't have to shoot at night and pay overtime to everyone. In the end they Told Joss to wrap it up because believe it or not, the set even in the daytime ended up doubling the cost compared to shooting at night.
Again, Firefly was not his fault but Fox the networks. It's popularity to this day tells us this. You can't get people hooked if they have no clue when a show is going to be on. It's not like today when we can watch things on the network website or on demand.
Joss also stated that the final product you saw on Dollhouse was not his. Fox made him change it to the single episodic crap that it was. Hence he left TV.
I loved Buffy the Movie... It was fun. Never saw Alien Resurrection, and the movie Serenity got done because it was demanded by the people (Joss made a good product).
Dr Horrible was so popular that NPH made a special appearance at either the Oscars or Golden Globe to massive cheers.
I love his dialogue. Maybe I will watch Alien Resurrection but me and scary are not unlike oil and vinegar. Unless your The Walking Dead, but I still hide behind my woman watching that. I think he is going to do VERY well with Motion Pictures as he can get more control. We shall see.
Never got into Lost, but I like Fringe, and I liked The X-Files.
IMO you can break down the movie watcher into two main types. 1. The Eye Candy CGI, explosion flim maker, or the Michael Bay/James Cameron types. 2. The Dialogue Driven like Tarantino, Zwick, Whedon or even Darabont (for his "horror"). Even Christopher Nolon is more dialogue driven than Action and his last films were heavy in action... But Nolan is a movie making wonder. His movies still have great story telling and he does not go to ludicrous levels with the eye candy and explosions.

I'd say there are a few similarities, and the first episode of Walking Dead was one of the best for any show I've seen, even if it does get a little worse afterwards.

Just wanted to thank you for pointing this show out. I downloaded and watched it all today and wow...really, really enjoyed it. Thanks!

The Walking Dead is a good show to be sure, but I don't see any comparisons to LOST at all. It makes waaaaaaay more sense than LOST ever did. . . and that's including that whole zombie thing.

The Walking Dead is good, but it's much more of a straight-forward narrative with little of the existential questions LOST posed regularly. The thought-provoking themes and episodes of LOST is really what made the show for me. The discussions and thoughts that came long after the episodes ended is what will stay with me for a long while.

If you mean a serialized drama filled with mysteries, well, you've already had Fringe, The Event, and Flash Forward since Lost. More will come every year.
If you mean a show that really captures the interest of the country and develops a rabid fan base dedicated to dissecting it, well, you had The X-Files before Lost, as well as shows like Twin Peaks and Millennium, to some extent. Lost wasn't original in that sense, and it's inevitable we'll get another before too long.
Lost was good, and it struck a chord, but any way you define it, it wasn't unique.

Agreed. Very different shows. I just really enjoyed The Walking Dead. I was glad someone mentioned it because I had never heard of it.

Alien Resurrection isn't scary. It's just bad. I like Joss. I grew up watching Buffy, loved Dr. Horrible, and although I hadn't seen Firefly, I really enjoyed Serenity. Alien Resurrection however, was absolutely horrible. It nearly killed the entire series.

Just finished the finale.
I think being able to watch this over the course of 2 weeks makes a huge difference compared to watching it over 5-6 years. It's a lot less time invested.
Season 5 and Season 6 felt like they could have been 1 season that got stretched into 2.
Still, I'm satisfied with it and I'm really glad I took the time to watch it.

Whedon does write pretty good dialogue, but more importantly (for me) he writes very good characters and comes up with some very interesting stuff to do with them.
But his Big Plots tend to be terribly cheesy.

Not the one...

I thought Lost was rude to fans that wanted to understand the superflous details of the show by making the finale a solid hour of "whatever, chill out - everyone is happy and not dwelling on this stuff."

I'm a big fan of Joss, because he writes incredibly strong characters that made sense.
I also think while he could be hit and miss in terms of story Arcs, The second, third and fifth season of Buffy were great well developed stories (Angel goes bad, The Mayor as a villian, Glory as a villian) and they became more powerful because Joss didn't make then the boiler plate monsters (Angel wanted to torture and punish Buffy for making him almost human. The Mayor saw Faith as the daughter he never had and it made him vulnerable, Glory was a god trapped in a human body who really just wanted to get home)
Angel overall was incredibly strong with the final season being the most fun and disturbing to watch (Wolfram and Hart knew that you couldn't stop the apocalyspse as earth was a hell on earth so why not profit from it) If you want to see a great character based funny episode you have to watch Smile Time.
Firefly was a great series with huge potential screwed up by the network, but Serenity more then made up for it.
The problem with Whedon is that he needs more then two hours worth of film time in order to build his characters and his stories and resolves them.
I also like the fact that he has a sense of humor (see his voice work on Robot Chicken), and that he's will to try something entirely new (Once more with feelings, which saved a horrible season 6.
